Chrysler LA / NASCAR 355 cu. in. crank shaft

-
Many HP MoPar cranks (like the 3.79" stroke) had an 8-bolt Hemi pattern flange for compatibility/strength.

Thanks. I don't know squat about these old Chrysler products. I was heavily into vintage Nissan / Datsun stuff. Sold all that and purchased a 68 barracuda. Datsun stuff got way too expensive, so I went to MoPar. Makes sense. LOL.

LOL, indeed!

Actually that makes no sense. As you saying Datsun parts and cars are more expensive than Chrysler stuff??? That sound you hear is my guffaws (but I could be wrong as I’ve never priced Datsun stuff).

Well, you can be the judge of it for yourself. But when a guy is willing to pay $1200 for a Datsun 510 tachometer... I'm out. Or $600 for a 1969-70 Series 1 240z ash tray? No thanks! A few weeks back an acquaintance's 510 wagon sold on Bring a Trailer for over $30,000 ... It was mismatched red panels. I miss the days when you could actually get paid for hauling away a junk Datsun. Or when a Z was about $10K fully restored. Some Z sold for $300K a while back. It's all nonsense. It was far more fun when it was cheap. At least with American stuff it's loud, rumbling and "actually" fast. There's nothing fast about a 1.6L Datsun 510 with a 2 bbl Weber. I actually sold all my Datsun and made about $8,000 on B210 parts. ... Yeah, say that out loud! Eight-thousand dollars on B210 parts. Yikes. Made enough money to buy this Barracuda and still have some left over. Wild world we're living in.

But that's like, my opinion man.

SHEESH! That's about the same level of hipster bait that 1st gen Cummins Rams have devolved into.

Yeah, that’s outrageous.

Absolutely! Speaking of hipsters - thats about the only people into these old datsuns now. All about who can have the most expensive 14" wheels or who has the most Instagram likes. It just isn't fun any more.

..anyway, thanks all for the replies on this crank. I took a second look.

The first counter weight is stamped "3.454" and also "baker 1123" the first weight also shows a stamp that's difficult to make out. Maybe "49056" (?)
No other markings. It is 6 bolt flange.

Going through other things I purchased in this lot.

A second crank I am curious about.

steel crank, PES 2713 stamped on front counter weight.
Substantial material has been removed.
8-78 date with "945" on second counter weight

And then, also, a third crank. This one came securely packed in a wooden box.

No markings other than a "M" on second counter weight. Possible date of '74? Hard to see. Very clean, looks new.

What's a 391 stroker 318 crank cost? Demand is what it is unless you can find a 355 builder. This is a cheap alternative to make a tiny 318/331 stroker without custom pistons. In a 340 its a...354!
Probably exceptional quality and US made also.

My buddy had a 510 2dr in Washington in about 1991. Carrera suspension, Minilites, SSS motor, dual Webers....we actually went up there (from Orange County!) in my B2000 to tow it home. Got up there and determined we couldnt use the bumper hitch as we planned as the car was too low (and the bumper was super light weight)... we left it up there with his ex wife...AND SHE SOLD IT! OMG.........

I know of this car! It sold a while back for $32,510

Edit: It might not actually be the same one. But I know of a car with Porsche suspension/brakes that sold for $32K, unsure if that's what you meant by "Carrera".

It was Yellow with black stripes down at the doors. and it was 31 years ago soo good memory! It was up in Bellingham. Actually it didnt have Webers, but it had dual Hitachi/SU carbs as he had a heck if a time starting it cold. He parked it on a hill and that helped him push start it. something like that. Datsun B-210 ' Honey Bee'? "Manufactured by WEN"? with the honeycomb wheel covers? Those were jokes back in 1985 when I was in High school. But it was a step up from the F10!

Funny enough, my good friend has an F-10. It's totally modified and has all the ridiculously rare imported Japanese parts. Like I said man, wild wild times we're living in where guys are building F10s!!!

I recently purchased a lot of Chrysler parts from a guy who claimed his grandpa was a NASCAR racer. Looks like a have a 355 cu. in. crankshaft for a small block LA. I have another crank that looks just like it that came in the lot i purchased, but I can not confirm its specifications yet.

What do I do with this crank? I really don't have a use for it. What's it worth? Who can use it?

Could they be left overs from the 90's when Dodge ran in the IROC? Those engines were 355 ci and I think they were based on the 318 block. Get out the micrometer and check. They may be a great start for a killer street engine.

Yes, right after the Camaro/Z28’s.

The actual block used I know nothing about. Though I’d bet it was a MP race block that was used. I also have a rotating assembly that I got in a parts deal.
(A all or nothing deal.)
MP also had matching pistons to the crank. The pistons and crank used stock length rods.
The total CID I have is 352. (4.03 pistons)
The crank is an 8 bolt flange

So, in order to use for his set up…. A race block = $$$
318’s are unlikely to go to a 4.03 bore (never say never) and sleeving down a 340 is nutz in cost just to use this. I know there are parts to insert in the crank journals of a 360 block. (If you have the small journal unit which I’m not sure if there offered in both journal sizes) Hughes engines has them though I did see them cheaper elsewhere. IIRC, Ramracing engines here in the states has them. IDK about destroking a 360. I guess if you were an active racer…. It would make sense. For a street guy, maybe not so much.

If someone wants rear crank measurements, let me know. I have to dig it up and out. No issues doing so.

Low comp 340s...how far they in the hole? Thick Cometic .080 MLS gasket and this crank....?

To answer the question of what should/could I do with this crank, I’ve pondered this myself. Even more so with what I have. I could split it up and make more of a mess of things…. LMAO!

Custom pistons would be expensive. And only yield so much. Interesting thought though.

Me? IDK what the compression distance is. I never measured anything on this assembly. It is labeled 10.5-1. How that actually fits and what it comes out to be IDK.

Im asking about the late model neutered 8.5 CR pistons. flat tops with valve reliefs.

You all might recall that for a while, Mopar was casting race blocks that had "318" cast on the side, but it had all the good "race" stuff cast into it internally.

I believe the rods that rumblefish is showing were forged from the better 4340 material in the standard 340 rod design. I have one set left of the "lite" versions that used the 273 design. Both with aftermarket bolts too! ARP/SPS? But because of the material, they were all stronger than OEM rods or some aftermarket rods that used 5140 material.

Pistons for the 3.454" crank were available in a couple of other oversizes so racers could sneak up to the 355 or whatever max size was. But I'm sure there are some 340 pistons with enough deck thickness that could be milled to get a good compression ratio. Likely some of the cheaper, older, heavy versions since newer pistons are already thinner and more expensive. Or some low compression flattops that are close. As mentioned, I had some 355 pistons milled that worked well with a 360 crank years ago.
3.580" -3.454" =.126" 3.454"-3.310" = .144" (Only have to worry about milling 1/2 of those amounts from the pistons..)

Before this stuff, Mopar Performance/Direct Connection also had some "Hemi footprint" rods for a small block. Heavy as hell, but you wouldn't break one due to lack of strength.

Oh yes! I recall. There are posts here with new guys getting confused and thinking they had a race block due to the number search’s they did. When I was doing my first engine some 35+ years ago, I fell into the same thing running the numbers.

What MP offered exactly, on this “355” assembly, I’d have to open up the catalog to see.

Keep this in mind # everyone of those cranks are top quality and absolutely US made ### hopefully they find the right home.
