Put in my 2nd side panel gasket ( paper) because it was leaking. Re fill with Red Line synthetic gear oil and its still leaking. Just wondering if there is a better gasket that works with these synthetics. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong.. It is a extremely slow leak and its definitely coming from the gasket No I haven't tried the conventional oil yet. Has anyone had this issue?

Did you use sealer on it? I only ask because they are meant to be installed dry. Are sure that it’s the side cover and not the reverse shaft seal leaking. Or possibly the 1/2 or 3/4 shaft seals. Also do you have alignment shoulder bolts in the correct locations on the side cover?

No sealant,it is so slow of a leak that it doesn't ever hit the ground. I will clean it off again and let it sit. I looks like the gasket gets wet and slowly starts to weep. It literally takes 2 days to get wet again.

You might want to check to make sure someone hasn't used bolts that are too long on the cover, and cracked the inside of the boss where the bolt screws in. I have seen this happen a few times, and oil will leak into the crack and out the threads of the bolt under the head. Also check to make sure there are no "remnants" of an old gasket stuck on the cover or case.

Just my opinion, but I'd leave the gasket OUT, clean the case and the cover operating room clean, apply a good bead of RTV, also coat the bolts with RTV install the cover and let it set up a good 24 hours without gear oil and it will never leak from the cover or the bolt holes ever again. Even if the case is cracked around the bolt holes. The leak will be over and done. People laugh at my recommendations for RTV sometimes, but do you want the leak fixed or not? RTV WILL do it. That's what it's made for.

Ok RRR but then, the next time you want to get inside there, the trans will have to come down, and then you will spend hours and hours trying to saw that cover off.
IMO ditch the synthetic.
BTW there are special conical washers for all but two of those bolts.

Horse ****. I just popped the cover off a rear axle today I used RTV on. I put a small prybar right under the edge and it came right up. Sometimes you're inexperience gives your fake *** completely away.

When things are sealed with RTV flexible items (diff cover) come off much easier than rigid items (4 speed side cover). I like hylomar/permatex #85420 on the machined flanges of the side cover gasket and transmission housing gasket. No leaks and much easier to deal with IMO. I like a dab of somethong on eaxh bolt too.

Whatever works. As long as a gasket is involved using synthetic oil with the case cover VERTICAL, IMO, it will eventually leak, if not right away.

I run Redline MTL for many years with no leaks. The gasket gets saturated with Hylomar which prevents wicking. All of that blue goodness in an attractive orange tube.

Well , I'm going to have to take it off and replace anyway at this point. I'm going with Jeremiah's system for now. Can't say Rusty's way hasn't crossed my mind but for now I'm not ditching the gasket or the synthetic. I'm considering going with a 50/50 Red line to conventional mix when I refill. Is this a complete no no.
