Ford engine question.

I've always liked how Ford did it. A lot of their four barrel engines were different right down to the pistons. BIG ports, BIG valves, more compression. What I never got was why they used RETARDED camshaft timing. "I GUESS" they were fighting emissions. Had they just ground advance in their cams through the muscle car era, they'd given Chrysler a run for the money. I've said as long as I can remember the Cleveland couldda been a Hemi killer.....and it's true. The small block that couldda beat up a Hemi.
Yeah Fords ,whan I was young and even now arent "cheap" I leared early that you just couldnt take a Fiord and bolt things on and get any real performance for cheap. I am talking "Pre" 5.0 fuel Injetion in the 80s. It was like if you had a dog 302, it was a dog 302 no matter what you did. Nopt like a chevy where you could swap heads, cam etc fairly cheaply. The right Mopar engine was always best bang for the buck, and a fast Ford was expensive :)
