Uncle Tony's response to Direct Connection

-
I'll give him this: He presents himself well on camera. He looks comfortable and expresses himself without looking awkward. I've seen other car guys on YouTube that may have skills but they are wooden and are a poor fit in front of the camera.
Hes entertainment I guess, if that's what people are into...I've said it before he's for the guy who sits on the couch more than he is in the garage.

That's very assuming being there are thousands of members on this board whom an unknown number agree and or disagree with you whom of which knowledge is yet unknown to any one of us ..... the most silent members could be game changers or door openers ..
I see alot of red X on here, and no retort doesnt make sense. Debates dont work that way.

There is good and bad all over this world. If you think "NOT" watching Uncle Tony is going to save the planet, I got news for you its not. Making mistakes is part of the process. No build goes perfect in hot rodding. Its been like that for generations. It's kind of funny how deep the naysayers have gotten into this. It really is ! Again, just a car guy making a video. Don't like it, turn the channel.
I've watched his videos only a hand full of times, and I think he is pretty cool. And I'm a big boy, I can differentiate between what works for me or not. I don't need the rubber bumpers on the corners of the coffee table anymore. :)
Uncle Tony, hopefully you are laughing all the way to the bank !

tell me really how much money do you think he makes on YT. And its not about turning the channel its about telling people jerk off ways of doing things. Everyone was 16 once with a piece of **** car he's like 60. I see it as a fail and woudn't want to know and associate people who drive **** like that on the street. When you see him on the street id bet his cars arent registered or insured, that Miata for example, hes acting like its cool to be a teenager sneaking around in a unregistered and insured piece of ****. responsible Adults dont act like that . Hes not the talented money bags type you guys think he is or try and present him as. I cant believe people are so damned dumb...to glorify mediocrity. Some of us are at a higher plateau I guess I know I'm too old to settle for less than what I want, and am not going to waste my time on junk. here's my prediction, Tony will end up at Carlisle with big Wilbur showing a heap of dung for a car signing autographs, to hell with the guys who actually have restored cars of the showfield. It will turn into a **** show section of the Chrysler nats. Drag a rusted hulk out of a you pull it tow it across the county and show it . I think these people have worms eating their brains...

Are you serious? It was probably the biggest engine building debacle in YouTube history. I feel sorry for the poor kid involved in that shitshow
Yes im serious
And that's the thing, it's a have to and not a decision. No ones bashing a have to, we are bashing the ones who had a choice but are tightwads or aren't really serious about it in the first place. I've done plenty of re ring motors, lapper heads... point came when I wanted to learn to do it right, getting better over time and to continue learning. Why only be happy simply because it runs?? Fk that. I want great, not "it runs".
So If you wanna chest beat over essentially the equivalent of cave drawings and stone axes.. then by all means, captain caveman.
I started watching Nicks garage ( one of the very best video/shows, my opinion) and I saw were they put that alleged rebuilt 318 on the run stand. Yes the guy (UT) did a poor job rebuilding it and there is no excuse.....If I as a 18 year old kid back in 1970 with limited tools and limited money could do a better or at least cleaner job there should be no excuse for a guy like Tony..... The price of what that young man did have to buy, that alone should dictate being more careful....I just did the heads on my 383, replaced with E street.....The stuff I needed in addition to the heads alone was costly. I dropped the oil and filter replaced with new, thats fifty right there, just like that young guy had to do to his engine. The money has to come from somewhere
Im not so much defending UT as I am talking about how things got done way back when and those things weren't necessary wrong.
I also worked in an essential industry my entire working career were the job had to get done now, done correctly, done professionally and safely. So when you are the top of your game/trade there should be no excuses, im sure we agree
Maybe I just filter more of these UT videos, im not into commenting on his addiction to tobacco or his finances, lack of, his "shop". whatever.
Bottom line is its entertainment in the late evening for car guys.

I suppose that's my point we were all young trying to learn and do things ,once you waste some money doing it wrong you learn...I agree Tony's finances are none of my business, however he pushed doing this(old car game) on the cheap those days are long gone. I remember when Mopars were unwanted and truly cheap. That was 35 years ago. These cars are gold now and restoring them isnt cheap, and I dont know about tennesee, but that Miata or the paln Z ot he coronet wouldnt pass state insepction in Pa,so that would be a yard art car...it would sit and a tree would grow through it. Driving it it would get impounded. what is the point of building a car like that? A common reply is "they are race cars. " really? do they really pass tech? I had heard he blew gear oil all over a race track with that Coronet and the other racers there were pissed. yeah he didnt post that video. I had also heard they didnt want him to come back.

Johnny Dart wrote "rubber bumpers on the corners of the coffee table " Made me laugh out loud
We just got rid of them seems not that long ago as the youngest G kid stands taller than any table corner
But those dam plastic safety things that plug into electrical outlets to keep little fingers safe....My wife still won't **** can them and fights me tooth and nail when I want to throw them out LOL
Thanks John Dart

Just went and checked.... wow, 215k subs !!!
here is a link to his channel, please subscribe if you haven't :)

I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to YouTube, I know you have some experience with it. So not talking about UT specifically, but if a channel has say 250k "subs" but they typically get 20 or 30k views, would that mean that the majority of the subscribers are not watching? That's what it looks like, although I'm sure it's not allways the exact same people watching.

I would say most channels get 15-20% of the sub count for views per video in the first 24-48 hrs. The "hot" channels will do much better. Some channels do worse. Seems the larger the channel, the tougher it is for them (unless they are a hot channel). After the first 48 hrs, the views per hour fall off drastically, though they will always continue to get views. I also think a channel like UTG's that uploads videos about 4x a week makes it harder to keep consistent engagement, just because of the dedication it takes to "stay that tuned in".

People who do well on camera...Fakers, imposters, attention whores who dance ,dress up...make up...pretend... ah yes .....actors...yeah he sure does have his act down.

The point I made was ten thousandths is taking off five.... and five thousandths is nothing....Do you agree or not? Buy a bore gage? I knew one guy who owned a bore gage and he wasn't about to lend it to anybody.....They cost big dollars back then and it wasn't until overseas imported stuff hit these shores that measuring tools became affordable
Anyone who depends on a scripted TV show like Uncle Tonys to learn how to work on cars will never amount to much of a mechanic and that includes every show out there today.......Learn the way I did by reading watching doing it making mistakes and correcting them.....The same way I learned my trade
Maybe you had the dollars to take a engine to a shop and have them rebuild it and great for you, some of us weren't in that position and we learned and made do

You say .005 is nothing? That may be if you are doing carpentry, but any time you are machining something .005 might as well be a foot. If a piston is designed to be installed with .005 clearance (.0025 per side) and you give it another .005 clearance you just increased the clearance by 100%. That is massive. When building engines .005 is an incredible amount to be off. You can’t be off .005 anywhere all call yourself a machinist.

I dont watch.
I tried watching one about a year ago, the 318 one... and he lied . My friend worked with the guy on that motor, fixing it before the dyno guy got it again.

You guys keep avoiding that fact, you haven't addressed it at all except for Steve welder who inquired.

If you want to watch a liar, go ahead.
Anything for entertainment.

I'm damn certain I've lost a few people on here over this and beating down some casting of head. But that's because those folks are bandwagoners with delicate feelings..who never understood me to begin with. I champion multiple things..but I'm not a cookie cut one size fits all blind diehard for stupid ****. Sorry to let some of you down.

And taking .010 off total, is .005 PER SIDE, and those factory pistons are designed to have a piston to wall clearance of about .0015 to .002. They are not gonna be happy at there new clearance of .012

Now, after you have destroyed any semblance of round and straight, with that three legged hone after 6 hours of honing, consider what your worn piston is going to do in your now massively oversized bore....its going to be able to **** to the side, and now your rings are no longer at 90° to the cylinder wall. Leak down city, that will constantly get worse as your once square ring becomes rounded off.

Those that watch him will continue. Those that don't like him, will still continue to watch him too... LOL :D

Bottom line is nobody is ever convinced in these threads. It's just facebook for us old men that say we are proud not to be a part of facebook :D (and I'm seriously not on facebook!)

when you run that loose you run the risk of burning oil. yeah you may have compression it may run but the grey smoke will be there and you are always topping the oil off. Tony knows this I suppose (maybe not?) maybe he's going by his cheap mantra and taking a chance I don't know. i know its future problems not addressing whether the engine needs proper overbore or not, and there are ways a do it yourselfer can measure and make an accurate determination.

When/if those "Jet" guys run that car, look for the smoke out off the exhaust.

I mean you do all that work, spend all those hours then it billows smoke ? disappointment. That's what half assed work brings.

While I get people that are defending him, you also fail to see why us who don't like him are getting at.
He is pushing the Wrong ways on how to do something, and showing you in a way how to be "cheap" but in the end cost you more money when your build fails like many of his have. He shows you how to do things the wrong way and pass it off as right because that's what he's always done. And that work shows when it fails.
When I was beardy getting into car and worked on dodge neons, I saved my money when my head needed to be machined, in no way would I ever of took a battery and 2x4 to surface the head.
And the ones saying were talking crap about him? What do you think some of these youtubers do when they talk crap about motortrend shows that build stuff no one can afford, the only thing is yea they spend money and its not "cheap" but they show you what they use, how to build it and show actual numbers! So I bet tony is a so called "troll" to Roadkill.

its typical nonsense those that know point out his misgivings those that don't know gang up and say the minority is wrong and are haters. I don't care how much money Tony makes on YT I have a career. I figure YT will run dry on him and he isn't going to get a cable TV show. Which was probably his goal to begin with. He's made mistakes along the way, bad mouthing parts manufacturers who did he think his sponsors would be? he threw comp cams under the bus in that Hemi GTX video series.

I port heads with a socket and my finger to guide me. AND, I showed it on youtube. LOL.. No bench flow, My car, my money, my time, my way !!! I try to give everyone else the same respect, including UTG :)

Roadkill guys actually trolled Tony. They called him out first. It's the little details that keep news from being 'Fake News. By the way, I like Roadkill guys.

Right but Tony preached a technique with no proof in dyno tests. Then issued a challenge without answering the there's first. Again all talk with now proof in the "performance" he is trying to show is we can get by doing these changes to our engines.

Why is it his job to prove anything to anyone? I've never flipped a piston, but I couldn't care less if he flipped 9 of them in a 318 LOL... I ported a lot of heads with claims of gain but I've never dyno'ed, proved anything to anyone. Many everyday claim things here in many threads and aren't required to prove it. His cars, his time, his money, his channel. I'm not defending him, I'm just giving him the same rights as other Americans - freedom!
