Hi everyone. Just bought my second mopar and looking for some advice. This car is a 1969 340 with four speed and 8 3/4. Engine right now is stock except for headers and dual exhaust. I want to make it a fun, reliable , hot street car. My current plan was to put on the edelbrock air gap intake manifold , and an edelbrock avs2 carb and keep the factory air cleaner. Then upgrade ignition and tune. Leaning towards fbo for ignition. I’m going to get all of this done while cleaning up a few cosmetic things and seeing what surprises I find getting her ready for summer. Then next year I’ll do a cam and springs. I’d like to hear suggestions on my parts combo I’m looking at as well as suggestions on carb size. 650vs 800 on the abs carb. I’m currently not sure of rear gear ratio but will check before the cam swap. I’m currently out of the country for work so not home to check. Thanks In advance.

Welcome...

You are sure to get A LOT of opinions here.

My advice is to drive the car a while before you make changes, that way you won't be making a change then thinking it was the change that caused that -insert issue here- to happen.

Also if it is a real GTS be sure to keep all the OEM parts you swap out.

thank you. It is a real gts so I definitely plan on keeping anything removed from it. And good idea on getting a solid baseline on the car before tinkering too much.

Nice GTS, you need to join the GTS registry! As said above, keep all the specific parts, you have a rare car there...

It all depends on what you are going to do with car. Keep it street friendly with an occasional burst down the 1320, keep it original as a trailer queen or show it at the local Cruzins.

You said... "I want to make it a fun, reliable , hot street car." I think you already have one. When you get home go out and enjoy it. A nice 1969 GTS that has not been blessed with someone making it more fun is hard to come by. Remember more is not always better.

Upgrading with what as the overall goal? Fun, reliable and quick? Oh hell yea!

I know what I would do for a simple and reliable ride that has some good pep!

Edelbrock parts from the heads up and select a cam that will work with the gear ratio, compression ratio, cars weight and if your going to use headers or not.

That looks like too nice of a car to mess with. Maybe my opinion but why? That car looks too nice to muck up. Not many of them left. If you want more buy a newer car.

Find someone who would like your hub caps, they are not '69's. 1967-68? Just take it easy, should be a real nice running car with headers. That would be my first upgrade after wheels.

lose the hubcaps and beautyrims.
get an old dealer license plate frame.
get a bumpersticker that says No Fat Chicks.

And, you'll be good to go.

I know what I would do but maybe your not me. Not a real big fan of headers on a street car. If they are fenderwell headers they would come off and the aprons would be repaired as they are structural. As far as upgrades I would go with eletronic ignition, a 71 intake manifold with the smaller themoquad and a cam along the lines of the original street hemi grind which will work with stock springs. I would also upgrade it to front disc brakes if it didn’t already have them. I would also go with US Cartool stiffening braces.

Thank you , Fenders have not been cut luckily.

Fun, hot, STREET, car? In my opinion,
1. Modern overdrive trans
2. Gears
3. Cylinder heads
4.Camshaft and valvetrain
In that order. 3,4 can happen together but don’t have to.
I’m not a restorer so the value of the car comes from my enjoyment and those are the things that would make it more enjoyable to me. The overdrive trans (5-6 speed manual) will make the car so much nicer to drive you’ll end up driving it more.

Good choice on the carbs. If you have a 3.23 or numerically lower diff, I would use the 650 AVS. Higher than 3.23, use the 800.

Stay away from the edlebrock if you plan on motor mods. . I have not seen an edelbrock make max power without mny mods. Carter competition series work much better.

First choice would be holley sniper 550 fuel injection. Self tuning. No matter how many changes you make to the car in the future this system will self tune. the sniper 4500 series will handle up to 1500 HP. Carburetors are a thing of the past

Very Very nice car.

Sounds to me like a good general plan.

1) I’d go with either one of the
Street Demon “composite body” carbs 625 or 750. They absolutely work at preventing boiling, vapor lock and hard restarts. Excellent throttle response
2) Edelbrock Air Gap for OOTB bolt-on, or a reworked Weiand Action + (gasket matched and runners tapered)
3) Performance curved electronic ignition
4) Upgrade to a solid cam, along with any head work/springs/rockers as needed.

Nice Looking GTS
I saw it on the internet for sale.
Is this a factory Black car?

Congratulations, have fun with it!

thank you. It looks like this car was brought over to California from Hawaii about 20 years ago and repainted there.

leave it the way it is if its stock. That 68 manual cam is sought after by many why change it... basically tune it up see if it needs the parts you want to replace.

It looks good
I was just wondering if it came from the factory Black, is the color code on the Fender Tag TX9?
