Any benefit to cutting holes in hood underneath scoop?

Have you seen how the factory holes are sized and located? I think they are about 4" or 4 1/8" in diameter. And there is a rubber piece that slips over the edge of the holes. Maybe someone makes replacements. Or I have seen where someone has split a small diameter piece or rubber hose and slipped it over the edge of the sheetmetal all the way around. Either may help keep out some water by acting like a dam.

I cut the holes in my 70 Duster, I got the duel scoops. It really cooled the engine compartment down. Before the holes you could feel the heat from the engine bay when driving. I parked once in a friends garage and he mentioned how much heat it threw off. After the holes the engine bay was definitely cooler. The engine never did overheat before the holes but it did run cooler after them. I didn't seal them to the carb, just let the air flow through. Was freaking nervous cutting a 4 1/8 hole in that hood though!! I have never really noticed water getting into the engine compartment, don't drive it in the rain much and when washing it I don't shoot the hose directly in there.

I'm not a fan of greys or silvers but that's a beautiful car. It really looks good.

I used rubber grommets made for trailer lights. Bought locally at a trailer dealer, they cost something like $6 each. I believe it took a 4 1/8 hole.

I put the dual scoops on my Dart GT and drove it that way for years. A few years ago I made them functional. I didn't notice a difference one way or another.

If you plan to make them functional, I would recommend the seals from DMT. However, I would also suggest some "practice" holes in some scrap material using different sized hole saws.

On my wife's 75 Duster 360, it's got a Dart Sport scoop. I keep thinking about buying some grommets and cutting holes in the hood, but then before I do something that's not easily un-done try and think what the upside would be.

Do people with vented scoops ever see any realized upsides such as lower under hood temps?

I recently saw pictures of a duster with a Dart Sport scoop on it that someone had posted on facebook, he went as far as cutting the hood opening big enough to graft in an air cleaner lid, then used a thick seal so that when the hood was closed, it functioned as a real fresh air scoop. This car gets driven in the rain, so I'm not sure if it'd be a good thing at that point.
Shanker long time no see. Like said the rubber will deflect minor, light rain.
I took pictures but waited to long to post them. Looks like been addressed allready. I pulled one off and measured it.
They are 3/4 inch tall. They do clean up the holes and give a finished look.
As you can see most of the, seal is on the outside of the hood. Sorry for the bad pictures.

Rain, rain ,rain

These are not going to prevent rain from entering.

I see so many folks with factory scoops and grommets installing the grommets with the tall side down. The tall side goes up into the scoop and a bit of sealer keeps them from leaking. They are designed to keep water sheeting up the hood out of the engine compartment. My 70 Dart has had a factory dual scoop hood with holes since 1980 and never had rain come in the engine compartment even in torrential rain.

Makes sense about the proper mounting of the grommets preventing water that's "sheeting" on the hood from entering. I thought that under the hood a semblance of low pressure would exist so that air would be sucked in while the engine is running. Hence the purpose of hood scoop(s) with holes in the hoods.

I would not cut a hole in the scoop but put water drain hole(s) in the air cleaner pan with tubes to run rubber lines for water drainage, if I was to be caught in the rain.

Think AAR / 6 pack set ups. They do this.

Somewhere I had seen a double open ended scoop. The best I can see from this is directing air to the air cleaner more directly than just an air cleaner sticking through the hood.
