The great oil filter debate

-
The thing about running a 10 micron filter is..... How long it it in bypass when the filter median is at max flow and no more can flow thru.
All that bypassed oil is pushed into the engine UNFILTERED!!! Even using a 20 micron filter, I'd bet that 20% - 30% of the oil entering the galleries is UNFILTERED. Suck it up Buttercup.

If you want the best filtering then run a real good 20 micron main filter and add what is call a 'Bypass' filter device that takes a low volume of oil and runs it thru a 2 micron 12 inch long filter then dumps that super filtered oil back in the block.

If I had a diesel 5.9 I'd run a Bypass setup. A neighbor had a contract with GSA to transport Military members cars from Seattle to the east coast to load on ships to transport them to England or Bremerhaven Germany. He had a Ford F350 Dually diesel with a 6 car 5th wheel trailer and was doing oil changes per tests with 'Blackstone Labs'. He was getting maybe two round trips from west coast to east coasts on 1 oil change. Then he did a huge oil bypass system and went from a 12,000 oil change to only changing all oil filters twice and topping off for 50,000 miles when Blackstone said "Run it for 7,500 more miles and retest". At the 57,500 mile marker they again said "Run it for another 7,500 miles and retest". He finally settled on a 70,000 mile total oil change interval and 7,000 mile filter change. Oil was Delo 400 15W40 and all filters were FleetMaster. But each oil filter change was like 3 quarts used oil removed and fresh oil added. I think a full oil change was like 22 quarts.

And remember how an oil pump works. When the bypass piston spring is pushed back, the oil is not dumped back into the pan like a lot of people keep saying. It is bled back into the low pressure side of the pump and gets sucked back up when the spring pushs the bypass piston shut. So if your oil pump is in constant bypass it beats the hell out of the oil AND you do not get good flow......

Back in the 70's I had a '71 XLCH 900 and a "72 XLCH 1000. After I rebuilt the '72 due to a broken ring gland I mounted a remote oil filter. Harley learned that you need a filter. Many of my buddies from the '60s all mounted remotes on their Pans. Air cooled is rough on oil. Post a pic of that Cafe Racer.

Wow you are Old school hardcore! I know it’s out there but it’s a dying breed. All boutique dealership manicured nails type now right??!!
Are you restoring that Cafe Racer to original or?

My '72 Sportster, it still doesn't have an oil filter. Sitting in the basement, looks better than it ever did.

Yes it is a dying breed! I'm running Manley pistons, with an S@S intake and Super B, into ported, oversized valve heads. But not changing that. It will be pretty original. I even have the factory pipes

XLCH is kick start only and has a mag. I want one bad, one in mid 60s. Rode my uncles all the time back then, in 70 he traded it for a pickup before I could get back to his house.

Hmmm not bad!! Not bad ‘tall! We speak the same language it seems! I had a 74 XLCH from 87-95 that was a 74” S&S stroker, had Andrews V9 cams, hogged out heads, Manley oversized valves, Super B carb, Morris magneto, kickstart only:eek: all sorts of goodies. Was an evolving bike but ended up like this until I sold it to my brother and then he sold it to our cousin who still has it. Man what vibration......along with the raw power when on those cams was frightening :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

That's Brutal! ,565 lift here. A local bike shop raced it at Sunshine Speedway...

These guys (old grizzled hard cores and the manicured newbies) with their “big twins” that looked down and ridiculed guys with Sportsters with the “chicks bike” nonsense. The old school guys knew, but still ribbed you, the newbies ain’t got a clue!....the Sportsters were the choice for drag racing in the day. Best I ever could muster was a 12.63@106mph with those forward controls. Trying to launch and swing your legs up to shift in to second was a real challenge. :realcrazy:

It was a wild street bike back in about 1990. It ran in the upper 10's at about 120mph in the 1/4 mi. Not bad for a '77 in Sportster. It was a race gas only for fuel. None of the today crowd wants it, so it sits in my basement waiting. I had to stop riding altogether, wish that I was 30 or 40 years younger. Don't we all!

Last year for a mag. was '69.

Never worried or concerned myself with labels. Been riding and wrenching on my own Harleys since '72. Associated with many of the top 3 clubs in my employment at Harley dealerships and before. Many of them rarely work on their own scoots anymore and 100% of the old school dealerships went under when they couldn't afford to up the ante to the tune of millions that Harley Corp. required. I usually ended up dealing with the old grey beards in Nevada, Arizona or NJ because I knew a Knuck from a Shovel.

That's Cookin' W/ Cisco, Bro! Mine was running low 7s. In the 1/8 ..with a 280 # rider, I was half that..

Bro, that's still Killing it!

Yep his was a 64, extra chrome, won second place at the bike show. I had a 79 Shovel but it was nothing like the Sportster.
One of my NJ customers had an all original '69 Sportster. It is a beaut.

'81 Shovel. 92 incher Could not hook it up, still ran 12.20. It too sits beside the Sportster.
