Looking for advice on a paint formula for 1968 QQ1 blue. The Dart is ready for paint but the body shop hasn't been able to find the right color. Everything they've tried is too light and looks like B5.(I have not seen it in person...just going by what I'm told at this point) A sprayout was done in 2014ish and the paint matched an untouched section of the A-pillar that had been covered by weatherstripping. That paint line has been discontinued. The bodyshop has done sprayouts of PPG, Nason, Dupont, Shopline and Exalta. Nothing has been correct.

I was just sent these pictures. They sprayed the hood yesterday in order to see a larger area to compare. The sprayout sitting on the hood is the one from 2014ish that is no longer made. I know it's hard to tell from a picture on the computer but any help would be appreciated!

This is the paint from my car. None of these numbers mean much of anything to me so it would be up to you or your body guy to decipher them.

Thank you! I'll give this info to the bodyshop. The problem is that some of the toners have been discontinued since they did a sprayout in 2014ish. So, those 08 and 11 dates probably have products in them that are no longer available. I appreciate the info.

Would anyone happen to have a sprayout of B5? It would be interesting to compair a sprayout of B5 to what they already sprayed. There might be enough of a difference that what they sprayed will work.

QQ1 is "greener" than B5. I had a '71 Dart that was B5, definitely has a red tint to it especially the later years it was available. In certain types of lighting my car can appear turquoise. B5 is a totally different hue than QQ1. Most people don't realize '68 QQ1 is a one-year only color, they just think it's B5.

I realize they are completely different colors. What I mean is that the shop is saying it looks like B5 to them. They aren't comparing it to anything though. If I had a sprayout of B5 to hold up to the hood they already sprayed, I'd be able to see if the color really looks like B5 or if what they sprayed is acceptable.

Have the body shop call PPG and get a "Profit" reading for the color that uses modern toners. Profit is the name of PPG's spectrometer. They have formulas on file for older colors with modern toners.

An FYI on paint.
Be aware that B5 in 1970 was EB5 and in 1971 B5 was GB5.
If you put the two paint chips side by side you will see the that there is a difference.
This is also true with the 1970-71 B7 blues.
I have been trying to find out if the B5 and B7 blue paints were different or the same between the 1969
and the 1970 colors.

Could be the same code but different vats. How different are they? Some of the modern paint codes I deal with can have a dozen different variants of the same paint code.

Take a part that is the color that you want to a body shop supply house and have them scan it.I just matched this orange I shot a motorcycle with lacquer and poly urethane clear . It got damaged while in storage and I had it matched in single stage catalyzed acrylic enamel . It is a dead on match as you can see in these photos. The tank is 30 years ols the side cover below is new .

Looks like the second one is GM Bright Blue (Like Bahama Blue)

Yes and 68 Q code is different than any of the B5's which were all a little different depending on the year.

The E means 69 so it's a carry over for 70. A 70 color starts with F and G for 71 etc...

I told the bodyshop it would be nice to compare the color next to a sprayout of EB5. They just sent me this picture of the hood next to a 70 Challenger they have in the shop. There is a big difference between the two although I don't know if the Challenger's paint is an accurate representation of EB5. I think we might be OK with the color. I want to stop by sometime this week and see it in person to make the final call.

If you like the color on the card have them read it with their color camera or their jobber can do it.
