I'm not trying to be controversial, but there were roughly 407,000 US military killed in WW II from all causes. So something doesn't add up to say there were 500,000 deaths from malaria alone.

I believe you're correct. From another source it was 500,000 infected and many were from the end of WW1 up to early into WW2.
