I have a Very well built and fast 440 with a complimentary 727 trans . I want to buy a manual trans convertion kit from Brewers .
Question:
Pilot hole in the 440 crankshaft . Will I have to have the crank drilled to except the Manual trans input shaft?

If your crank isn’t drilled, your only other option is pilot bearing from a Dakota pressed in the crank flange. If you go that route you will have to cut 5/8-3/4” (can’t remember exactly)off the input shaft off your transmission

No need to trim the input shaft.

Once you get the kit from Brewer's, bolt the flywheel to the engine.

It will provide a 'table' 90 degrees to the crank center line.

You can then use a magnetic drill press to drill out the pilot hole, some places rent them.

I DID NOT try to get it exact for a bronze bushing, I went slightly over the diameter of the pilot shaft but smaller than the OD of the bushing so there is still meat left for that in the future.

I will be using the Dakota style roller bearing.

Your 440, does it have a cast crank? If so,You'll also be external balanced. Forged crank, likely internal balance, usually is prepared for an input shaft and provisions to have a bushing.

Don't know why you say that. I've only had 4 different 440's. 3 of them were auto originally and none of the 3 had the pilot hole deep enough or large enough

Call Dan at Brewer's,
He will give you the straight answer.

Seems to be random with mopars. Recently pulled the numbers matching 340 automatic out of my 73 Dart Sport. It actually has the bronze pilot bushing installed in the crank.
