So, I am having to replace some of the bulkhead connectors on my 1965 Dart. Have pulled the top and bottom plug from the firewall and am a little confused. Looking at the wiring diagram either numbers or letters for the connectors. Is the plug with the numbers on the top or bottom? Is the numbered plug read left to right with number one (1) closest to the engine? And is the lettered plug read left to right with letter A closest to the engine?

Bulkhead: Engine Compartment:
1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1
5 6 7 8 8 7 6 5

A B C D D B C A
E F G H H G F E

My suggestions is make a drawing of what you see.
You can use the shop manual drawing as the basis.
Then write in the colors (or use colored pencil/crayons ) to mark up the paper. That's what I do, even if I take photos.

Below diagrams are from the '65 Plymouth manual which should be about the same as the Dart as far as wiring harness goes.

This is the INSIDE diagram. You may find numbers and letters on the inside that match some or all of the cavities.
Later connectors are so marked, but I've not worked with a '65. I see some possible labeling in the photo here.

Compare what you see under the dash with the colors and wire sizes (I've drawn in a few) figure out which whether the illustration shows the view correctly. [edit: based on Dibbons photo below, this may be the backwards drawing]

This is the ENGINE compartment diagram; and yes its annoying that they did not adjust the drawing to show the view from the inside as opposite from the view from the engine side. So that's what you will have to straighten out.

Use the pointed side of the bulkhead connector to keep track of orientation.

Do the same thing with the two connectors.
The lettered connector has a hump offset, possibly by cavity G & H. ( H has the gray wire G6 )

Note that S2 (starter relay signal) changes color, but most are the same colors inside and engine compartment side.

The numbered connector has a hump in the middle, supposedly between an empty cavity and the one with the wire to the lights (black with yellow trace).

There is what appears to be an 'oops' on the engine compartment drawing -
The battery feed/charge A1 should have a blue fusible link connecting at the starter relay like this

you can see it here in Dibbon's photo

Speaking of Dibbon's photo.
It looks like the wires colors match up with this view.

Have a good Christmas!

What I do is make CERTAIN by picking out a "key" wire I know what it is for, like the big ammeter wires, etc. All these cars and all the sections have certain wires, IE one is for the wipers, the headlights, and the ignition/ charging stuff.

Also we don't have any idea what diagram you are looking at. Wander over to MyMopar and see if they have a 65 manual. You may have to settle for Dodge vs Plymouth, etc

Assuming that '65 is the same as '64 (I don't know that it is)...

The numbered connections are for lighting, while the lettered connections are for engine stuff. Horn wiring is lettered and washers (if you have them) are numbered.

If your bulkhead connector hasn't been hacked up, it has different nubs on the 2 connectors so you can't cross them (ie. numbers with letters)

If you look at the bulkhead connector on the interior side of the firewall, the pins should be labeled (1 - 8 and A - H).

Get a factory service manual and check out the wiring diagram, it should make things clear.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I think that I can/have a good idea of how it goes. Just wish the manual had a drawing looking at the connectors in a horizontal position.
I think that the drawing from Mattax cleared it up for me. If I rotate the drawing 180 degrees it matches the bulkhead connector on my Dart. Numbers on the bottom section, letters on the top.
Pulled up the diagram form the 1965 Plymouth Service manual and between it and a wiring diagram I have for a 1965 Dart, things finally started to clear up in the old man's head.
Believe that I have it figured out, but if not as Arnold said "I will be back!"
Thanks again and Merry Christmas

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. I'm in the middle of rewiring my '64. Most of my engine wiring had melted itself into one big congealed mass, so before I ran a single wire, I spent about 2 weeks deconstructing the factory diagrams.

Most of the wire colors are the same between 64 and 66, (I have both of those year FSM's) I can't imagine they would change for 65.

Yeah like Del said, no CLUE which diagram you have, as there are a lot of incorrect ones floating around, so you have to be really careful. I would recommend only the factory diagram, like Del said over at mymopar.

Don't worry, if I need some help I know who to ask.
Will let you know how it turns out.
Thanks
