I'm looking for a 42RH transmission - 3 wire, overdrive with locking converter- to upgrade a 727 on a 318 Poly. Would need to be shipped to the UK.

Thank you for any help.

Just be aware that the 42RH requires a larger crank register than what is on the poly- you'll need to have a machine shop open up your crank register or have a custom torque convertor made. Just want you to be aware before paying to ship a transmission "across the pond".

Great to know, thank you. Is this also the case for a 46RH?
Also, any info about different body size 42RH and 46RH would be handy. I picked the 42RH as I assume it will be easier to fit in the transmission tunnel for the 727.

I had to get my early A crank pocket opened up so my 42’s torque converter would fit. I’m sure the 46’s converter would require the 67/earlier vcrank to be opened up.

to the OP, I have another 42RH including its matching the torque converter. I’m willing to ship to the UK but no idea of shipping something large like a transmission.

I would be really grateful if you can find out what's involved in shipping and likely cost. Nothing available over here and the cost of gas in the UK makes regular use really hard to afford. My 727 is on its last legs so I think it's time to upgrade. Please send me a PM with what you need for the transmission.

I have done a bit more reading about the cranks. This suggests the earlier Poly cranks for the cast iron transmission are 8 bolt but the later ones are 6 bolt and identical dimensionally to LA so should work with the 42RH. However I can't find any info specifically concerning register / pocket dimensions.
Mine is a Canadian 318, probably around '65 or '66 with 6 bolts. Either way, I think a custom converter is probably the best way to go if I run into trouble, assuming I can find someone over here to do the work.

You are correct that the 62/later cranks are 6 bolt and will bolt right into a LA motor if needed.

I can ask the machine shop who did my crank how much he had to open my 67/earlier crank up to fit the 42’s torque converter hub

I wouldn't worry. My engine is fairly recently rebuilt so I would rater not strip it down again. I don't know the difference between locking and non-locking converters but optimism suggests it should be possible to either modify the locking converter to fit a crank with a smaller register or to use both converters to make an item that fits.

In case you missed the premise of the idea in post #6. Could it be cheaper to list the trans for sale on ebay. Win the bid and use ebay services as the shipping pre-agent to the UK.

Personally, I'd just order the parts and rebuild my 727.

Well worth checking the Ebay option, thank you. I have read that gearboxes need to be drained of fluids and possibly have some sort of non-hazardous certificate for some carriers, maybe just if being sent by air. Anyone have any experience?

I have a friend with the same model of car who changed from 727 to 46RH. His consumption went from 18MPG to 28MPG - UK gallons. With gas at $2 per liter - roughly $8 per US gallon - it doesn't take too long to get your money back and it makes for pleasanter cruising on the freeway at lower revs.

I just checked the diameter in the back of the crank on my 318 Poly. 1.815" on the digital calliper, roughly 1 13/16". What is the diameter of the lug on the front of the lock-up torque converter on 42RH?

Another shipping option is for the OP to find a shipping company in like NJ that fills and sends shipping containers to the UK. Seller has it truck freighted to the shipping co in NJ. I've sent big heavy items and even cars to Europe and Australia this way and is a fairly cheap way to go.
