Father-Son 1974 Duster Project

Here’s what I’m thinking, the 8 and a quarter rear is 1 inch shorter on each side then an eight and three-quarter I’ll be using a 10 inch wheel and a tire that’s 20 mm wider than a 275 so they’ll be less bulge I think it’s gonna fit. So when they get here in a couple days I’ll find out

I used standard 40 series Flowmasters on a car and hated them. They were loud and had drone. However, I installed the Delta Flow 40 series Flowmasters and they are really great. I would assume the Thrush mufflers you have are a aggressive sound. D/D you can use a 8 inch wheel and just change the offset to like a 4 inch backspace and it will push the wheel out to the outer edge. It will be really close though. It could rub a little
I ordered a set of the Flowmaster DF mufflers
I can’t get anything over a 245 on the 8” Vision 4-1/2 backspace wheels I run because the tire bulge hits the spring. I have an 8-1/4 and it’s an inch narrower than an A-body 8-3/4. These 295/50s on a 10” wheel will give me the same spring clearance and will come 1/2” inside the wheel well. Will verify when the 10” wheels get here.
I’m also looking for a set of bolt on sub frame connectors from Santa…

The newest hard luck case in the fleet. 1970 Javelin with a 304. I couldn’t stop myself! Now I need to find front left spindle and suspension…

Hopefully the 10 inchers work. That's a big wheel
NFG on the wheels and tires. The sidewalls just touched the leaf springs. So they are going back to Summit.
So now the choice is stay with the knockoff wheel and run the 245s OR buy Weld Postar wheels with a smaller backspace and run 275s….

Got any pictures of them on the car ? Your spring and wheel tubs are stock right ?

You try playing with and spacers? I have 255’s on my Scamp. I thought Duster’s would have more room. But I guess it would be on the outside of the wheel.

And yes everything is stock location. The tub size is no the problem. The problem is an 8-1/4 A-Body rear is an inch narrower than an 8-3/4 A-Body rear. So the spring hitting the side of the tire is the problem. My wheels only come with 4-1/2 backspace. They are Summit Racing knockoff (practically exact copies) of Weld Prostar wheels. The Weld wheels come in 2-1/2, 3-1/2 and 4-1/2 backspace. The 8” Weld wheel with 3-1/2 backspace and a 275/60/15 is probably a safe bet. The summit racing wheels are returnable even if you put a tire on them to check out fitment. But if you mount a tire on the well wheel which is close to 400 bucks you bought it and it can’t be returned
Here is the comparison between 245 and 275 width tires.

My Scamp had 245 on it when I towed it home. Looked way to small. I knew back in the 80s on my first Scamp I ran a L60/14 so I knew I could get a bigger tire under the car. Right now I have a 7 1/4 under it and plan to swap over to an 8.75 when I round up the rest of the parts I need. So I’ll be back to playing with tire sizes. I do have a set of 15x10 and 15x8 rallye wheels.

I got the Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 series mufflers installed today and I love them. they sound so rich and no drone. Big upgrade over the Thrush welded I had on the car!
Merry Christmas everyone!

The 275's are gonna be tight on the springs too, but you could use Dr. Diffs 3/4 inch spring hangers and shackles to move them in a little. Lot of dang work to do it though! :BangHead:

The kit is out of stock right now. I agree it looks like it’s a pain to do to gain 5/8”

Yeah, if I was going to the trouble of pulling the rear end to get the perches moved, I would probably bite the bullet and put an 8 3/4 in it to gain the total length back to get it off the springs. As someone else suggested, you might try spacers. I hate those things because it just seems too Mickey Mouse-ish! I suppose if the spacers were hub centric, they may be more trustworthy.

I’m not getting a new rear or using spacers. I put time and money into conveying my 8-1/4 to a suregrip with 3:55 gears. I’d buy the Weld wheels with a 2-1/2” backspace before I did anything. They are about $350 each x 4 so like $1500 to switch to a name brand wheel from a knockoff. I like how the car looks with the 245s except from straight on from the back. Those 245s look a little skimpy….

D/D those mufflers sound so good! With the 8 1/4 and 8 inch wheel 4.25 backspace is most likely your best bet with a 255 tire. But, you would have to use something like new Craigers which are beautiful. I believe that's as large as you can go without Mods on our 74's. I think what you have looks great though. My 2 cents

I texted him the other day and he said they would be back in stock in a couple of weeks. They're coming.

Offset spring kit or the one where springs move over to frame rails? Can you show underside pics if possible?

Yes. They are the MP relocation kit that you weld the "pocket" into the frame. The inner wheel tub is the inboard limiting factor.
However, the Doctor Diff kit will work the same. With Doctor Diffs hanger and shackle the inner wheel housing becomes the limiting factor for inboard tire clearance as well. The only reason to ever NEED a MP-style (in the frame) relocation is if you mini-tub. No reason to go that far if you want to leave your factory wheel tubs alone.

I'll try to find pics but the car already moved ahead of me. I am getting the hell outta Cali!! Car's at my Dad's in Oklahoma.

I already have the mopar offset spring relocation kit in my dart sport. 8 1/4 rear as well. 5.5 backspace seemed to me like it would come very close to springs. That is why I asked. By the way that is the perfect tire wheel combo ever!

I know. I was all geared up to go 8.75. Squired a b-body housing, 3.23’s, and a 489. Then I lucked up on these wheels and they fit perfect with the 8.25”.
I did some research on the 8.25 and found out they are actually really strong and LPW makes a girdle cover to make them stronger. They also have less parasitic loss than an 8.75.
