My dead engineer buddy used to call it "that frozen white ****" He was actually born a few miles N of me, but at a VERY young age moved to San Diego, and later worked and lived, and died--in Austin, TX. Whenever we talked on the phone he used to say "we don't allow that down here."

However, he did spend a trip on a Scripps research ship (he was a maritime HF radio operator for Scripps) down into the S Pole area.

We had 75 here today.
Tell ya bud I remember a COLD winter in Glynco when I was at the Navy RADAR school. We had to wear "undress blues" to school, which had the big "stovepipe" legs and the wind just went right up those damn things. I actually sent money home and got Mom to send me a couple pairs of "long" underwear. I don't think it got below 28-ish but the humidity and wind or whatever made it a LOT colder

Those damned old WWII hangers were drafty as hell. Had a central steam plant on base--not in each building--just one plant on base, and steam piped all around the base with insulated pipes Those classrooms you either roasted or froze LOL

Precision Approach RADAR lab in the classroom. I accidently found this photo on the web which is incorrectly labled, and instantly recognized the equipment

RADAR units of same type we studied. These are in a different location on base, used to train the air controllers, but are same type units

Yeah I remember that story well. I've been down around that area years ago. It's still pretty desolate.
