I need to bend a wrench with the hot wrench. should I get it just hot enough to where I can bend it (I would think yes) or get it cherry red then bend it and should I immediately quench in water or let it cool on its own? thank you for your time. RR

Like you said, just hot enough to bend it and throw it in the dirt to cool.

I've always simply let them cool on their own.

not wanting to harden it,just bend it to reach a partly hidden nut. OK I will heat just enough to bend it then let it cool naturally on it own. thanks guys! RR

Proper way to do it:
Heat to cherry red
Bend to desired shape
Quench in oil!
Metal will now be brittle so you must anneal it!
Place in oven set to 450 degrees
Let it preheat with the oven
Once preheated, turn oven off and let it cool overnight
Ready to use!

My brother and I were super into knife making and tooling and this was the best way to do it!

like RRR said just heat it bend it and let it cool. I’ve done ratchets and wrenches and few other tools over the years and they are still in one piece and work as intended

What if it is made of Chineesium chit metal!!???? lol
Then the piece must be heated over a fire made of bamboo wood and the quench can be either Won Ton soup or Ramen noodles. This process has been approved by the Wuhan Institute of Technology. Do not attempt this process if there are wild bats or monkeys in the immediate area.

I've bent most tools I need to modify cold, clamped in the vise, since I don't have a torch.

It also helps to play this over the shop stereo; in order to move the metal, one must first be able to move the spirit of the metal.

then the working end of the wrench will be soft.
I say heat it, bend it and then wrap it in something that will hold the heat in immediately after bending like foil faced fiberglass insulation. You want the bend to cool slow to avoid hardening and being brittle or glassy.

Japanese have a much simpler method.

sounds like some of us had a very merry christmas! this is a 3/4" nut partly hidden inside the early 273 motor mounts. I am going to take the wrench & bend it in a vise & get er done. thanks guys!
