IF it happens again, grab both back legs of the dog you had (since he knows you) right at or above the joint and back up pulling them apart, provided the other dog is chained. That is the preferred method amongst most dog trainers.
I applaud you for trying, it is difficult, but if it works out it is rewarding for both you and the dogs.
