Car Starts in Gear

I have a 66 Barracuda Im finishing up. I,ve installed a B&M shifter. My question is the car will turn over in any gear. Reverse light are working when in reverse position. Is It adjustment or bad new safety switch. Any help appreciated as electrical work is my weakness.

Is the NSS built into that shifter? It should be open when in gear, preventing the starter relay from working. Ohm out the NSS lead on relay to ground in and out of gear. It should change between N and in gear. IIRC its the green wire here...?

Thanks for the reply, I,ve installed the reverse light switch that came with the shifter, I also put in the NNS that came with the shifter. I jumped from the relay to the switch and then to ground. It seems to work. The trans switch is just plugging a hole now.

"Why not" just use the NSS that is ON THE TRANSMISSION and likely worked "fine?" In other words why did you change it? The original NSS on the trans has one terminal (the NSS) up through ?68-or69? and then changed to the 3 terminal one. The one wire simply goes over the trans, up the firewall, and to one of the "flag" push on terminals on the relay. You are done.
 
76 727. I stared with the nss on the trans and wired it to the console harness in the car. No go so I figured what the hell and wired the switch that came with the shifter. works perfectly now.

Yes, use the wiring and switches that came with the console. A '76 model transmission would use the 3 wire NSS. Unless you know how to wire that correctly to a single wire car, (your '66 Barracuda) you may have compatibility problems.
 
Thanks again for the reply. I went back and hooked up the trans NNS again as i should be wired. Same result as b4. Wired the shifter switches back and I have neutral safety and reverse lights. Only thing I hate about the shifter switches is they are real touchy

Same as before "what?" It's really simple. The center terminal goes over the transmission up the firewall and hooks to the one spade / push on connector on the starter relay and grounds it. If that does not work, either the switch is bad, there is something wrong in the internal "rooster comb" (loose) or the shifter is out of adjustment.. Probably THE no1 troubleshooting aid is to wiggle the shifter when twisting the key. If it clicks/ cranks then the shifter / linkage is likely just out of adjustment.

Can he use a single wire switch on a later valve body/ rooster comb? I know you can't use a 3 wire switch on an early trans with swapping the rooster comb but can it go the other way?
 
I've been told you cannot swap switches, but since it's the NSS and not reverse he's worried about "just use" the right switch for the trans.
 
That's what I was getting at with my questions. You can't mix and match single/3 wire NSS's and transmissions without also changing the rooster comb inside too. The switch and rooster comb need to match for the switches to work correctly. Then, you also need to wire them correctly too. It's a simple circuit, but, it still needs to be connected right.
 
Im baffled because I can Wire the factory NNS as schematics show and I can start in any gear. The original shifter had a reverse light switch built in. Got that covered. So I,m wondering if the new NNS i bought is no good or not. I rebuilt the trans and the rooster comb was good and correct. having the same fun with an aftermarket fuel sending unit.

An original '66 shifter (either floor or column) would just have a backup light switch. The NSS is a separate part, and just a single wire version in '66. It has to match a single wire rooster comb in the transmission. If you use the 3 wire NSS with the matching rooster comb, you need to attach the factory single switch wire to the center pin on the 3 wire NSS. If the stock wire is connected correctly to the starter relay and center pin, and it still starts in all gear positions, you either have a bad switch, rooster comb, or the wire is shorted to ground somewhere.
 
That what I,m thinking. Aftermarket parts are a crap shoot at best. Fuel sending unit the same thing. Gauges proves good but only reads 1/8-1/4 tank with measured 1/2 tank.

That's correct, you need the NSS to match the trans not the car. Get a 3 wire connector and only use the center wire to the starter relay
