I am looking at a 1964 late 64 apparently and I am having issues with the production number. It says there were approximately 415,000 darts in 1964 but the number on this if I’m reading it correctly is 681xxx vin tag says L1452681196. Thanks

I'm not versed very well with pre 1967 V.I.N. numbers, but for what it's worth, the last 6 digits should represent the total production of cars coming out of that build plant.
That would include ALL Plymouths, Dodges, and Chryslers that were built there and all configurations be it 4 door, station wagon, convertible, 2 doors, etc.
681,196 is a high number, I think you are right in assuming that the car is a late build date one for sure.
I hope this helps,
Tom.

The VIN printed on the title matches a 65 VIN sequence
L - Dart - V8
4 - Dart GT
5 - 1965
2 - Hamtramck
681196 - Sequence number (Unit 581196)

If you are correct on the VIN tag reading L1452681196, it is probably a typo, the 1 in place of the L would be a /6 not a V8

Bloody DMV folks make all kinds of mistakes. Even though they are now computerized, it's what gets typed in that counts. They had one of my boats which is aluminum--tagged as glass on the registration. Since that might imply that I stuck the numbers on the wrong boat, it could have been big problems.

Tom very good information that makes much more sense including all models and Chrysler dodge and Plymouth models.

How about a photo of the car? That way we can verify whether it's a '64 like you say, or '65 model like the title says.

Yikes, someone has done a VIN swap most likely. That's a '64 model by appearance......of course someone could have put a '64 front end on a '65 body at some point. What does the dash and taillights look like? How is the VIN tag attached? Is there a fender tag? Photo of it?

He said he was told it’s a late production year 64. September and said that the 65 model year was late because of the retooling

We do not have the 1964, '65 or '66 Dodge TSBs on HH yet but here is a link to the 1966 Plymouth page - https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/TSBs/1966/66-1_page2.jpg

As you can see, the Hamtramck A bodies for '66 started at 500001.

They were also built in St.Louis.

And...... these cars were NOT built in VIN order regardless of plant. ;-)
I don't think everything on that page is correct. It claims they made '66 Barracudas at the St Louis plant, but, I believe they were only made at Hamtramck and Los Angeles.

That looks like a '64 model. IIRC, the new models started in Aug of each year. Was there something different in the changeover dates from the '64 models to the '65 models?
That’s what I’m being told that the 65 model year was late September early October and they was still production on the 64 model

What is the shipping order number off the fender tag or radiator core support?

I know that they were making '65 models by Sept 17th, 1964, because I owned one built on that date. Anyone here have an earlier production date on their '65 model?

There is a vague memory deep in a dark corner of my brain that Hamtramk had two assembly lines with one of them starting at 100001 and the other at 500001 in some years. '66 was also the first year of the "new" VIN tag configuration..

I believe that it must have been 1963. The 63 line up was introduced late September same year. The 64 model vent inte production early August 1963.

Most auto plants shut down the month of July for model year changeover and restart production about August 1st exact dates vary.

As I thought. That makes the OP's car suspect. We would need the shipping order number and more documentation to see what the problem is.
