Car Starts in Gear

Same as before "what?" It's really simple. The center terminal goes over the transmission up the firewall and hooks to the one spade / push on connector on the starter relay and grounds it. If that does not work, either the switch is bad, there is something wrong in the internal "rooster comb" (loose) or the shifter is out of adjustment.. Probably THE no1 troubleshooting aid is to wiggle the shifter when twisting the key. If it clicks/ cranks then the shifter / linkage is likely just out of adjustment.
Can he use a single wire switch on a later valve body/ rooster comb? I know you can't use a 3 wire switch on an early trans with swapping the rooster comb but can it go the other way?
