So, I landed the plane on the RR track, and the PD came..........

They radioed ahead to stop the train. Doesn't look like he even tryed.

Thank a Police person today! Try radioing Metrorail and having them stop a train within 3 minutes....aint gonna happen. May as well try and stop a ship.

Long story short, by a bit of luck, we didn't end up with a dead dump truck full of solidified asphalt, and a power pole across the tracks than ran behind my business. The metrolink was usually running 45-50 mph thru there.
We realized we had no idea who to report a problem to, other than 911. Could they get the trains stopped if they had to? I have no idea, but if that 40mph train hits a twenty ton block of asphalt? Bet that wouldn't be good.

Yeah, he may not have even tried the stop that train. At that point, he did the best thing, actually. Had he slowed the train, there's always a chance some debris could have gotten between the rails and wheels and caused a derailment. The chances of that happening are greatly decreased if he's at speed. It just knocks anything in the way off the track and it worked.

bring back the pilot (cow catcher!)

Assuming you COULD get ahold of someone in charge at metrolink (or whatever your commuter rail is called) would they halt all the trains on the word of some bozo on the phone? Or from a 911 operator who took a call from some bozo on the phone?
"hi, you have to stop the trains on the green line, there's an airplane crash on the tracks......."
Sure. I'm sure they will have the trains all stop...... not.

Have you never heard how difficult it is to stop a train?
Like, the Trane A/C slogan, 'it's hard to stop a Trane'?
It's physics, man.

I just saw a comedy skit on a Mexican television station last night. An airline passenger (male) was very nervous until the pretty flight attendant told him that planes were a hundred times safer than trains. She continued: "... in fact, just last week over a hundred persons died in a train accident." So the guy asks: "Really, what happened?". She told him a plane crashed on top of the train (then a bunch of canned laughter).

Imagine the story he's gonna tell his wife;
Hi Honey?
Yeah ....
I nearly died today ...... twice!
hahahahahaha
No seriously; the plane is a write off, but the train is Ok.
pause
um ....... what?
Can you come pick me up?
Where are you?
In the hospital.
hahahahaha; seriously; where are you.
Forget it, I'll take a cab.............

LOL. . . Certainly a "once in a lifetime" event for most involved

Calling 911 is the best way to get in touch with the people who can stop the train. I was a 911 dispatcher for a bit, and we had a direct link to the Union Pacific folks and had to stop trains on many occasions, usually when some dipshit got stuck trying to cross where there wasn't a crossing. That being said, most people know it sometimes takes a mile or more to stop a train, even when they go into "emergency." I wouldn't imagine commuter trains are any different.

Those cops saved his life, no doubt about it. Great job to everyone.

I agree with all. You know what you're talking about. I worked for the railroad for 40 years.
