Looking for some ideas on mounting a tach in my 66 Valient. I have a small Autometer tach.

Do you have any blanks on the instrument cluster. If your tach is small enough that's what I would try.
I have mounted mine to the left of the cluster on top of the dash next to the A Pilar.
You could also maybe adapt the plastic a-pilar gauge pods to yours.

I use an extra long screw and mount it to the lower screw hole on the A-Pillar.
Comes out at eye level but off to the side a titch .

Not sure if it's the same but my 72 dart has the tach mounted using the screw for the a piller trim

How about the left side of the steering column in the lower dash. Just like the Formula S Barracuda. 65'

How about something a bit more work and more radical. Source a '66 Barracuda dash and put it in...

Simple way, on my 66, I had a black Stainless hose clamp... the Duster is a step above, i repainted the steering column ( kinda a low gloss black, looks killer) then took a.worm clamp and HF heat shrink.... looks great! Mounted it between 1 and 2 o'clock. NOTE, that's a quick fix, easy budget Thang. The above suggestions Are WAY BETTER! just wasn't happening in my ride

Pontiacs [maybe other brands also ] had a mid/late 60s option of a hood mounted tach. These are available as reproductions with modern electronics. Maybe an option.

Sounds like how I did mine on my Demon.

The smaller tach is in my 70 Dart. Mounted by the pillar trim screw. Been in place 20 years and never loosened up. The big tach is in my '67 Barracuda. It is mounted with a home made bracket with 2 bolts into the pillar with rivnuts.

That’s another option. Not sure if anything is behind there. The fuse box is just below

On my old 67 Barracuda I lifted the dash pad, built an C shaped bracket, attached that to the dash frame and then reinstalled the dash pad. Tach mounted on the bracket above the dash pad.

I have a small Sun tach mounted on Vixen's steering column just a little past the 9 o'clock position. It's just right and doesn't obscure the view of anything else. You can see it in this video.
