We've owned a house on the canals in the Port Charlotte area since the late 1950's when it was built. Hurricane Charley took the roof off in 2004 and that was actually a blessing because when the insurance rebuilt it, we finally got air conditioning and windows that weren't glass shutters. That's hardly every few years. Yeah it is hot, humid, and buggy in the summer but it is a pretty decent place to be from Oct-May if you don't like cold.
