3 years in a depression

-
Wow! Someone should have intervened a long time ago. Very sad, but also encouraging to know people pitch in to help (and in this case A LOT).

This is why I do a inspection of my rental every 3 or 4 months.
I go thru and replace the smoke detector batteries, furnace filters, flip switches and just in general check things out.
I had a renter try to start hoarding a few years back. I nipped it in the bud quick. She started saving her trash.

I've come across 2 houses this bad in 25 years of doing house calls for telecom. First one I was shocked. Called my boss and he told me hell no, make it good outside and tell the sub to throw a phone cord out the window and plug into NID (phone box has a jack). 2nd I was a little more sympathetic and told her Ill fix one jack that I can get to and just use that one. Even got her a cordless phone out of my stash so she could carry the phone to her chair facing the window. As a church project we (30 of us!) cleaned a front yard of a house like this so the city wouldnt finer her. 10 hours later and a haul away, we had her yard good enough to get the city off her back. She ended up becoming a member of our Lutheran church even though she was a Messianic Jew.

I have no idea about other states but I do know if EMT, or other agencies just happen to enter a house in that condition were alive they can call social services.
Thats exactly what happened to my fathers cousin who has some personality issues and is and always was a slob. She had to get a attorney, go to court and from what I understand got help to clean up her house
My close friend is similar but no alcohol involved, to look at his home from the outside you'd never know
He had a good job before he retired and is highly skilled, he dress's in clean clothes, you would never know what the inside of his house looks like but its a disaster
About 30 years ago he finally did a renovation on his home, exterior walls, foundation had to be replaced, interior walls were sheet rocked. A new kitchen was installed. The home had one big vent in the floor for heat from a converted coal hot air furnace, I ripped that out and myself put in two zone hot water baseboard, I also did the roughing for a first floor bath room and relocated the hot water heater from the old kitchen to the baseboard
He never finished the house inside, left walls open. There was a few boards of sheetrock in the hall and up to 2019 they were still in the same spot
The house was a wreck inside, he kept every piece of junk mail delivered for the last 30 years. The living room was floor to high with junk, there was a little path to a single chair and card table. The kitchen stove was inoperable and rusted out. The countertop and kitchen table had three feet high of everything possible.
However the worst was the bathroom, I went into there to take a leak and I looked inside the tub enclosure. The tub and tiles were had mold covering 2/3 of that area, black nasty mold. I came out and asked him if he was taking a shower in there and he told me yes. I ripped him a new asshole, I told him if EMT, fire or police every entered this house he'd be in trouble. I thought to clean the bathroom myself as he is partially disabled but my wife flipped out and said no way
The bathroom was to far gone, it was so dirty he had it gutted and a new bathroom installed, he had the kitchen gutted and a new custom kitchen put in.....He got three woman who used face masks and TVet suits to empty and clean the living room, the mice dirt was everywhere. The exterior walls were put up. The living room is still not painted, floors not covered and he is starting to hoard little by little. The old refrigerator is still in the living room unpluged and he tells me he is calling someone to remove it but thats been two years now, doesnt want me to do it........The kitchen is cluttered but not to bad, never got a kitchen set , still using a folding table
His bedroom is a nightmare, second floor still full of trash although I did remove a lot of junk
These people have issues and need constant help and support. They can and often are difficult to deal with and resent your efforts to help them.
I try and encourage and offer to help but honestly im close to done, I've got more than enough on my plate taking care of my wife, my own house is spotless, my wife has OCD and as much as we joke about it she really is fanatical in that nothing, not a piece of paper is out of place, so I see the direct opposite of the spectrum.
God bless for helping this woman

I had to stop watching the hoarder shows on TV, have an uncle who is probably a hoarder, has not allowed any family members in his house for over 20 years, won't take calls from my mother, etc. He was always a little eccentric, never married, so I don't know, I haven't seen him in close to 20 years.
Good on all of you that have had to deal with this type of thing. I can't imagine how difficult it would be.

Hopefully you can get it clean and take care of the smell. Sad people fall into depression live like this. A 75 year old woman drank all that beer?? Hopefully you can get some $ for the aluminum, could really add up! Good luck and hope she gets some help.
This is sad, and good on you Kim and the others helping her out.
She must have at least $1000 in beer cans there alone.
In Canada, they charge a deposit on all drink containers and beer cans and bottles are worth 10 cents each.

10c a can! She's sitting in a gold mine! Wanna know something strange? I've seen probably 20 homes I would consider high level hoarders and 18 involved were occupied by upper level college grads, ie Masters degrees..5 were educators! I try and make small talk with them when I'm working to make them feel a little more comfortable as its hard enough to get them to even let you in. They all say 'pardon the house, I'm moving some stuff' or some BS. The worst one was a retired high school history teacher. That just struck me very odd, that people who would invest so much time and money into their mental condition would totally let their physical situation degrade to total chaos.

I think they maintain a public facade to deflect whatever emotional needs they have that are not being met. Funny you mention teachers, my uncle was a teacher for nearly 40 years.

Well, we weren’t allowed back into her apartment. I’m pretty sure she will be evicted. She said he sister will be coming on Monday. She wouldn’t let the land lord in for another inspection. Kim

Well there you go. Yall tried and good for you.

You’re a good guy and friend to try to help, some people like clutter.

My sisters place wasn’t that back but between the cigarette smoke, empty pizza boxes, and empty vodka bottles she was getting there. She lived long enough to put my mother through hell a few times and died a few years after mom passed away.

Hey there! 3 years is a long time to be dealing with depression. It can be an incredibly tough and lonely experience, but it's important to remember that there is hope and there are ways to manage and overcome it.
She probably should see a doctor

Yes she has family. I don’t know that they ever came to see her. When we did deliveries there we just set the stuff on a table outside the door. It’s with great sadness that I have to report that she has passed away a month ago. Rest in Peace Sandy. Kim

I hate to hear that she has passed. Her family may wind up regretting how they treated her

I hope She left this world knowing someone cared about Her, & whatever comfort it offered Her, sorry to hear. Peace..

OMG, I still can't understand how these people live in this mess. I was depressed, but my house was the tidiest place on earth in that period of my life.
If you watch the program hoarders , They say right at the beginning How many millions of people Suffer from this problem... Watch that program for a few episodes. You'll see it piled up to the ceiling to where they're crawling on five feet of stuff to get to from room to room..

I can't watch that show anymore, it just makes me wonder why someone would want to live like that. I realize that it is a mental disorder, and I don't personally understand it, but it still makes me wonder. Having said that, I have an uncle who is probably in that state, he has not allowed anyone in the family to enter his house in over 30 years. Barely even has any contact.

That reminds me I gotta go visit my uncle... I seen him the day before mother's day at the spring classic car show and he was with my cousin.. I haven't been over in about four years as he's always telling me what I can't do and i'm a can do person as you probably know... My aunt was a cleaning lady and they divorced many years ago and I don't think hes cleand since I've known him...

I totally get how sometimes finding the right words can be a challenge. Life can throw us curveballs, and it's okay to feel unsure. If you're finding it tough to keep up with tidying your living space, it might be worth considering that a messy environment can sometimes reflect our emotional state, like if you're dealing with depression. Remember, you're not alone in this journey. If you're curious about understanding more about anxiety, you should definitely check out what causes GAD. It's important to arm yourself with knowledge and resources to navigate these feelings.
