What everyone's opinions on the best intake to run on stock stroke 360 with 12:1 CR, solid flat tappet cam and ported 59 degree w2 heads? Drag race build. Hoping for a shift point around 7,000. Also what's everyone's opinions on what brands for a forged crank and forged H-beam rods? I'm thinking Callies crank and K1 rods. 600 Hp is the goal but I want the rotating assembly to be bulletproof like it's making 800Hp+. The 360 is going in a 3,700 pound D150 pickup, 8 3/4 with 4.56 or 4.89 gears. 2.66 first ratio A833

Maybe the block should be changed too then @800 hp. The truck is going to have traction issues

You are a glutton for punishment. 800 hp short block. Isn't that r3 territory?

If I were trying to make big power these days it'd be a later model starting point most likely.

I’d say having some idea of et/Mph you’re looking to run would be a more accurate way to go for any recommendations vs using an arbitrary horsepower number? I’ve seen enough posts here regarding W2’s to say you’re probably looking at a Strip Dominator.

M1 Tunnel Ram if you can find one. For a single carb Intake, I'd say the Indy would be best.

I love the project by the way. A couple of us on here are building trucks.

Have you looked into a main stud girdle? Also, what are doing for traction?

For those of you who was thinking his goal was 800 hp ...

His goal is a 800 hp short block with 600 HP.

I actually imagine a factory based short block could handle it for awhile but I have no basis of experience to back up that assumption. Most folks suggest the block will let go north of 600 hp.

I wouldn't say this if I weren't involved in one right now. And no, it's not mine, but I wish it were! Gen III. Holley kit. I recommend a good 6.1. When you get into them, this stuff will make you forget about small block and big block anything. Of course, this one is definitely outer limit. 6.1 taken out to 4.08 square bore and stroke ( That's right, 426) with Crower, CP, and Manley rotating assembly. Home blended e85 and hopefully a ProCharger, but maybe a big turbo. Going into an 8.50 cert. Dakota chassis.

I've got dyno sheets and an engine that says otherwise. 650 hp 408 with a Procharger. But I understand the boost comes on gradually so it's not just like a 650 hp NA motor. It's why I suggested a stud girdle like what's in my 408.

I'm actually thinking about giving my Procharged 408 a refresh and selling it to go that exact route. Perhaps just NA.

For the OP, start looking for a Dana or 9" if you reach your HP goal.

Yep. Agreed. I think there's still a place for big inch big blocks, but those gen 3s have such a good foundation.

Every 6.1 block I've sonic tested had very thin cylinder walls. Every 5.7 block I e tested has very thick walls. I've also seen way more blown up 6.1,s tha 5.7, s and that sayi g something since the 6.1 ,s were only made a few years. J.Rob

Start with a good foundation, open your wallet and purchase a Ritter R3 virgin block.

easy
Indy intake

I disagree. Building for this type of power is going to cost big no matter what head your using. Once you purchase W2 heads, you just need the valves and then porting like any other head though a porter these day may charge more due to it being cast iron and a PIA.

Springs and up are worked in with the cam. So IF any head is purchased loaded and the springs are not up to task, then your purchasing that again so… might as well included that cost in with the cam. Lock and retainer prices are nothing by compare.

The real pricey part, besides porting the head is the intake choice. That’ll be pricey.

For a single 4, yep!
For a tunnel ram, Holley Strip Dom or a M1 TR. IDK which one is better for the exact build your thinking of. It may be one is better for more/less cubes or RPM, etc….
That there is a good question!

Afford yourself the best crank and rods you can spring for. Best of luck, may it all go well and keep going when you get it done. I’ll be watching & learning.

Go ahead and plan on Cal-Tracs at the least. But if you can stand to, back half with ladder bars and coil overs.

I thought you’d like to see the NA combination. I wish I had video of my experience driving it around the block. I don’t know what it makes at the crank, but it made 465 to all four tires on the dyno. It’s an Inertia Motorsports build with their custom cam. It’s already built for up to 25 psi boost.

Just noticed..stock stroke, 3700 pounds, 8.75 rear, 833 tranny…
If i am at the track when you debut that combo, i am going to be standing WAY back, out of the way.
You are building a grenade

IMO, he’ll need to walk it out instead of dump and run.
