What size are hood bolts?

-
They are 5/16 18 same as fender but different washer for early and late 67-72 1/2 and 72 1/2 - 76. You have and early hood
5/16 bolt ? That’s way too small I mean that’s damn near 1/4 inch around this bolt needs to be 1/2 I think as 3/8 too small

5/16 bolt is too small for hole . Can just push it in with no threads touching. 3/8 is close to fitting but doesn’t Catch a thread so I’ve been thinking they are 1/2 and some thread that I can’t figure out
Ok, if you're 100% sure on that, then someone has modified that hood and drilled and tapped those holes out bigger. In the picture you posted above, is that your stuff, or did you just post that for an example?

and FWIW, I agree about the need to find out first WHAT you need, before actually posting a wanted ad. Otherwise, how do you know what to ask for?

It looks like in this case though, you need to verify the size and thread pitch of those holes first, since it seems to be something "off the map".

Someone drilled and tapped it to 7/16 14. Or it is drilled for a 5/16 helicoil. Install 5/16 thread inserts with JB weld quick set.

The slides in the hood with the bolt holes in them......are they removable somehow? I guess he could cut the hood?

That is what I would do. He is asking for a bolt . Think he would be able to do that?
I don't know. I think I would want the correct bolts there though. So maybe cut the old plates out and make new ones with the correct size holes?

Back to the hood, try finding a tap the right size and just chase the threads. This will clean the threads and give you the size of the correct bolts you need. Local auto parts store or hardware store should have the bolts available, unless you're going for oe resto

I am just asking here ARE YOU SURE you know your bolt sizes? The bolt size that fits those hoods uses a 1/2" wrench. ONE HALF INCH WRENCH. That is the standard head size for a 5/16 USS bolt. A 5/16 bolt is not "damn near 1/4 inch around" that is, a ONE QUARTER inch bolt is "1/4 inch around."

I'm just askin', OK?

Here's the possibilities:

1....You need a 5/16 bolt with a 1/2" head
2.....You need something larger (unknown) because as OldManMopar said, someone may have tapped it larger, (was stripped) or used a helicoil repair

By the way NOBODY on here likely knows more than Steve, OldManMopar. He KNOWS his stuff.

Got a thread gauge and/or a set of taps and dies? Pair of calipers? Measure the hole and/or bolts you have. Figure out the diameter and thread pitch that you need and source the right size.

1968 Barracuda hood. Factory thread size. 5/16”. I’m thinking yours is the same as per your pictures.

Definitely sounds like someone drilled/tapped the holes after stripping out one of the bolts. Same thing happened at some point on my Duster. I have two or three different size bolts holding my hood on and one of those is stripped too. I either need to do like RRR suggested and replace the plate in the hood, or heli-coil the holes

I generally hate this site. Only a few of you all have ever been any sort of helpful. So thank you to those people.

If I thought I was I was in that group of people you mention.. I'd say to you.. fk you and the horse you rode in on...but I don't think I'm in that category.

I always thought or knew them.. as a 5/16 med thread bolt. I think I would take them from a van, truck or car as well.. so that opens the door to more sources. I would bead blast or solvent them to raw, oil them and crew them in... then paint them over.
BUT I'm not a bolt expert..and my screen name is in regards to engines/mechanical mopar stuff.
Best of luck finding the bolts, I'm sure you'll find them ...if not...maybe the holes are stripped already from using the wrong pitch bolts.

My dart has two different sized holes but im the one that drilled it out. I broke a bolt off removing the hood so I had to drill the broken stud and retap the hole a size bigger.

And we can't fix it over the phone. If every supplier's bolts are the the wrong size and what has been suggested isn't right, you will need to figure out for yourself what is going on.

Many times a stripped SAE thread can be tapped to a slightly bigger metric with just a tap, no drilling required. I know that's sacrilege to put a metric fastener on an old Mopar but 'get 'er done' (with a European accent).

If it holds the hood on what the heck. If you are nut and bolt restoring, a different story then.

Outside the box, maybe check the nut minor diameter with a known drill bit size?
approximately .328"-- .350" likely 7/16"
.375" - .400".......1/2"

.354"- .377"........M12

If this is an actual picture of your hood, I won’t guarantee they are 5-16”, but I will guarantee they are not 1/2”.
I use 1/2" Bolts... about 8" long and Galvanized to bolt roof and decks/ docks together.. 3/4 " head... lol

Yeah! And to align it.. just slam the hood over n over till it closes ...if doesnt close...it must be the core supports fault. BFH time...just give it the what for till she locks down.
