Wherever you put the lever, that's what gear it will stay in. If you leave it in "drive" (third) it will stay in third! You will be pulling away from a stop sign very slowly, and lugging the motor like mad. And if you shift into first at 75 mph, BAD things will happen.
You have to shift gears with a full manual valve body, just like a stick, but without the clutch.
