Okay let's divide the family. 340 or 360 and why

Didn't we just play this game a few times.
I'm going straight to the 440. lol

I don't like cast crank engines.

they look funny in pre 72 model cars.
definitely more funny in pre 70- model cars.
sorry I am old school.

Doesn't matter. Starting from a bare block they all cost the same.

bare 340 block, 500-800
360 100 bucks, maybe.
common sense dictates invest in what goes up in value, not flat value.
a rebuilt 340 on an engine stand is $ 4,000,,,,or more.
360 maybe half.if you are lucky,,,,

273! 5.2/5.9 Magnum!
Okay, I got that out of my system.
Irrelevant question, since you didn't bother to post an intended use.
You must be intending to build stock stroke motors, since if you're building a stroker the factory displacement doesn't matter one iota.
So as far as stock displacement goes, go 340 if you want to spin some R's, 360 for a solid torquey street motor.
And yeah, for all the flamers out there I'm well aware that a 360 can be built to turn some good rpms; but for a given build, a 340 will most always spin higher. And likewise on similar builds, the 360 will generate better torque numbers.
Decide on your purpose, then decide on your engine.
And these days, the choice will hinge on what you can get that's still in buildable shape..

I agree the 273 is also a great engine, and when that 340 is on that engine stand, five people will want that 340, to 1 person wanting the 360'

360. Cheaper because assholes think the 340 is priceless. 360. Because the longer stroke delivers more torque at a lower RPM, perfect for the street. 360. Because they're easier to find.

If you aren’t married to sun 3.50 gears and stock converters the 340 will out run a 360 all day long. It’s simple physics. Bigger bore, shorter stroke, more RPM. That’s how you go fast.

340 and 360 probably have the same potential. There is just a mystique about having a 340.

assholes have the common sense to see it is all about how much money goes in, and what it is worth when your done. If you don't care, great.but a cast crank 360 has the same value as any run of the mill 350 chevy engine. It works for what it is, but that it is all it is.
A guy finds an original 340 car with no engine, and he will kill for an original. The 360 may perform, but, so?
If you want to race, go for it. There are thousands of 360 engines around, so put the money in them. don't ruin a rare 340 engine.

as said above, the 360 dimensions mimick the chevy 350,,,

Depends on usage. if it is for grandma to drive to church on Sundays, whatever is cheapest [ for you ].

If it is for performance, there is no substitute for cubes.
