At 400+hp, What kills A904s?

-
When somebody wants to run over 400 horse thru a 904; on the street, I put them on IGNORE. You guys are proof that the only thing that beats cubic inches is CUBIC DOLLARS.

I run a 904 behind my 408 that's been mid 10s multiple times. 1.50 range 60 foot every time. Wheels up. Drive it on the street and it holds up just fine. All it really has done is it has the low 1st gear out of a slant 6 904 transmission, reverse manual valve body, 5 clutch hub with good clutches and a 5.0 lever.

If you can’t make a 904 live, you get a TH400. Wasting 10 cents on a 727 is just that. You can’t even get an aftermarket case for one.

You can drop a 904 clutch THROUGH a 727 clutch. Why spend and extra thousand dollars on extra billet crapola when you can just run a stock 727 and be done with it? The illiterates can go ahead and mis-quote me; consider the source...The 904(originally the TF6) is fine for what it's intended for, but all this worthless encouragement for guys to invest in a 904 if they're running over 400 horse is morally misleading. I'm happy to come on here and trash the myths about torqueflites. Anytime, fellas...

There was a time (and probably still is) where the 904 ruled in Comp Eliminator. Not the big, clunky, overweight 727. It’s a power eating slug.

Like I said above. If you are breaking a 904 go to a TH400 so you can at least get an aftermarket case.

That guy is so out of touch he doesn't even realize that most if not all of the stock and super stock mopar racers out there are either running a 904 or a 727 case with modified to work 904 internals in them but I don't know why i'm wasting my breath actually when once he made the 400 horsepower comment about 904's that pretty much closed the case for me with him.

The weakest part of the 904 I think is the high gear clutch drum spring. I haven’t used the reverse wound spring, just the multi spring and retainer. And at least 4 high gear clutch disks, and all the clearances in specs. I also always run a manual valve body to eliminate the kickdown linkage and adjustments

The original poster didn't say he had a race only car, plus he stated that he was going to a four speed and just wanted to use the 904 for a short while longer until he could afford the four speed changeover. Does that sound like somebody wanting to drop 3-4 grand into his 904? Obsessing over a 904 for an extra tenth in the quarter is insanity on a street car. How about you guys stop freaking out like a bunch of maniacs; trying to get everybody to drop a bundle in an inherently weak-*** tranny? NOBODY has even suggested anything to strengthen his 904 to make it live a little longer; just all out big bucks. I put five .061 Red Eagles in EVERY V8 904 direct drum I overhaul. No stock clutches in the direct drum and never a stock front band. I also use a Kevlar front band in every single one. I think most of the posters on this thread are POSERS who pay somebody to do their trans, and have no real experience THINKING and DOING. They spent a ton of money on their trans so now they want everybody else to suffer the same. HAHAHAHAHA

I bet this guy will never ask a question again..

Congratulation's assholes.

Look what they put in the Challenger Drag Pack. Turbo 400.

Ya they better use an aftermarket case behind a mopar; intermediate pressure plate will blow out the case lugs and slice that whole trans in HALF. I use a 4l80 .106 retainer in every single one of them. C6 is the best three speed auto.

So I can say whatever I want about CudaFactHackJob and he won’t see it? :D

Joking aside, I really do appreciate the folks who have provided some helpful info here.

Im not sure I’m better equipped to preserve the functionality of this slush box but I definitely learned a few things.

I'd really be interested in what you've learned. You mentioned "helpful info" but also "not sure I'm better equipped to preserve the functionality of this slush box"..What are your plans for your 904? Oh, and I meant customers who persist with that notion...

Another racer thinking street cars should run race parts....WHY??? I think I'll call it "904 Derangement Syndrome"...There are a lot of daily drivers on here that don't need to be advised to spend $2k on a 904 tranny when a 727 will work better and more reliable for them at one tenth the cost.

I think a glide would be the best option for a strip car and it doesn't break the bank.
The 727 would be a better option for the OP.

the 400 has smaller clutches..it does have a center support and a splined direct drum which prevents wobble..but the case lugs for the intermediate support plate are weak.

Powerglides, C4s and 904s are rich men's toys. They all require a huge investment to not burn up. I think the op is under the impression that a 904 CAN'T make him as happy as a four speed, but the way he refers to it as a slush box tells me that he's never experienced a performance automatic. He should rebuild his 904 with 5 .061 red eagles in 3rd, kevlar band for 2nd, competition shift kit and different 3rd return spring setup if he's shifting at over 6k, and kd set up right. And when anybody asks me if there's a break-in period, I say kick the tires and light the fires.
