I have had my 05 5.7 in my 67 Barracuda for 11 years now with over 80,000 miles on it. 6.1 Intake, Factory ECM 545rfe transmission, Alterkation front suspension, 8.8 with 373 gears. Classic auto Air. I drive this car all over the country. I live in South Texas and have been to Ohio, Washington, California, Nevada, Florida. My Sunday cruises are at least 4 to 8 hours. Autcross race it and occasional drag strip at least twice a year. I think with your budget you will be able to pull it off. You will have to do tunnel work for sure. You can also use the Slant 6 kmemeber. There is a thread here on it and seems it gives you more room. My transmission just went out on it so when I fix it I’m upgrading to eagle heads that I have sitting on a 2104 long block that needs a cam and lifters replaced. I can’t use the 14 because I would have to change my electronics. I say go for it. I don’t regret doing at all. When my son and I go on a trip we camp out as you can see the back is filled with camping gear. No tools required for any adventure we’ve been on.

Very nice car! I agree on the tunnel work thing, I had to fabricate one as well. The reliability of the Gen 3 platform is amazing. My next step is the A/C. Just a beautiful car guy, well done Sir.

Tunnel is already modified for the TKO-500.

For the guys using the coil over suspension, what was your motivation for doing so? I'm not saying I like or dislike it, but it isn't for me. I have lots of $$ invested in the stock style suspension and want to retain it. Pretty much all of it is aftermarket except the K, LCAs, and pitman arm. Did you go with that setup for ease of installation?

And I don't value the opinion of a person who denigrates everyone who doesn't share his opinion. If the best you can do is insult people and where they live, perhaps this is not the forum you belong in.
Did I just ruffle some snowflake feathers? LOL

Some peoples opinions are stupid, that's just reality, kinda like Democrat's......they can't help themselves for being ignorant worthless pieces of **** so in the best interest of society they should never be allowed to think and or make decisions......same type of stupidity and dangerous thoughts happen with car guys......some know no better and need to be reeled in.

For me it was it was just easier than hunting down all the parts I would need to add power steering and power disc brakes and lack of information and knowledge on my part at the time being a newbie to Mopars or even cars at the time.

- I can't speak for the other builds here cause I'm working with the narrow early A, but my motivation was the removal of the torsion bars for the exhaust and also the removal of the steering box for a rack. Moved it out and under the motor as opposed to next to it fighting the headers for room.

So... Wait a minute SIR...! You want to limit freedom of speech, limit freedom of opinion, and freedom to express themselves? Seem more like a Communist state of thinking to me? Also and infringement of ones constitutional rights.

In a nutshell the reason I went coil over was sheer laziness and simplicity. And I wanted to eliminate the torsion bars for the space gained. It simply made everything easier for me. Mine was a roller when I started so virtually a blank canvas if you will. I had zero invested in front end and was swapping over to the HDK K frame so it just all made sense. I race against some guys that still utilize the “traditional” factory setup and they are certainly as competitive as anyone out there, however there are less and less of them each season. The coil overs do provide more flexibility if you go from auto cross to say straight up 1/4 mile drags. Not beating a dead horse but as a competitor in several arenas not just cars I often have to embrace technology advances as they appear to stay competitive. Not that I do not like nostalgia, as I am a State Champion with single action pistols, but I do not defend my home with them. I utilize a red dot on a SIG for that. I see the beauty in both sides and really just becomes user preference and application. Apologies for long winded answer but this was a good thread and a excellent conversation prior to the trolling and I am trying to reel it back in to exactly that. Just my .02

Not knocking your choice, or anyone else's, but I'm not so sure I would agree that just because there are less and less people with TB suspensions that means the coil overs are more competitive. They are probably lighter so they might be better on a drag strip, but auto-x or a road course might highlight some shortcomings. And I don't see how a coil over is more flexible than a TB, both need an adjustable shock to be flexible and both can adjust the ride height with the turn of a wrench. In that way, both seem just as flexible and more so than a standard coil sprung suspension.

Just seems like too many people are too quick to jump on coil overs because they are new tech and all the other makes have them. Certainly they have the advantage of more room, but I suspect they give up some chassis stiffness. Not saying one is better than the other, my only point is that sometimes things are adopted not because they are better but because people think they are. Witness the SBC, might have been better than the flathead, but doesn't mean it is still the best option.

Just seems like every magazine build recently touts the conversion as if leaving the TB's in the car is the same as running a 1bbl slant 6.

Again, to be clear, let me reiterate, I'm not against anyone that uses coil overs. Just voicing an opinion. Don't want anyone thinking I should have a brown fish for my avatar. :D

Great reply Dion! That is exactly my point, here is another side of the coin described eloquently and with real world experiences. Racer Joe asked for the whys on coil over. And the replies from all, were based on preference and a technical aspect. These conversations are exactly why I joined FABO. I have learned so much I could never pay it all back. Plus I have got to meet some great folks at the tracks all over the Country. And you guessed it Dion I am a drag racer! Hah! That being said I worked on the pit crew for a Porsche sponsored USCCA D production National Champion road racer. So I love both but my heart is in drag racing. Thanks for asking the question of us Racer Joe, now quit screwing around and drop that Gen 3 in there will ya! Hah!

Thanks for acknowledging this. I don't need guys beating on their chest saying which suspension is best. Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one. If simplicity is your reason, that's fine with me.

I think I've made the decision to start collecting parts for the swap. It would be nice to get everything I need and simply make the swap over a weekend. I have a large connector on my firewall for the engine management already. The plan would be make the harness so it can plug into the same connector. I don't think I would need to do any rewire on the firewall side, but that will need some investigation.
At that point, it would be a K member drop out, notch frame rail for alternator and paint, then install new K and engine. Plug in, and start tuning! I'm sure a single weekend is a lofty goal, but I think I could get it pretty close in one weekend.

You can get connectors from DIY HEMI. I don’t know what fuel delivery you have but would recommend an in tank pump and a corvette filter regulator. You will also need a flex plate for the trans. Good luck. I couldn’t have done mine in a weekend, I don’t plan very well. I did do my my Alterkation in a day with the motor still in the car. Keep us posted.

We’re bouts in Louisiana are you. I will be going to the NOLA Mopar show in march. I’m in South Texas.

This is exactly what I want out of my car, regardless of if it is an LA or G3. Lot's of miles, hood open only for car shows and to check the oil. Nice job!
