I was working doing siding at a townhouse complex, and there was an old Ford van in the way of doing some work. The kid who owned it came out to move it, and told me he didn’t want it anymore and was looking for someone to take it, as it was parked in an unauthorized spot. He told me I could have it, but he just bought a new battery for it and wanted $35 for the battery. I gave him the $35, and drove that van for about 2 years before I gave it to a buddy of mine who needed a vehicle to get back and forth to work. Best $35 I ever spent!

1969 Pontiac LeMans for $300 in 1989, sold for $1300 two years later. It was a very nice car.

1983 my first car bought it as it is shown for $650. Built 318 with a slipping transmission

Also bought a 70 Lemans sport for my sister as her first car for $75 in 1987. Guy thought the transmission went out. Turned out the cable had broken for the floor shifter. Gave him the $75 had him sign the title over and after that had him start the car and keep his foot on the brake. I reached under and flipped it into drive and drove off in the car

Not sure if it counts as back in the day but I bought mine 16 years ago for $2000. Slant six, 31,000 miles, and I’m the second owner. Didn’t look much different then this besides stock hub caps and suspension.
