I have an A833 I took out of a 65 barracuda that the guy was setting up for street/strip use. Was told it had racing gears. I don't have a need for it but wanted to find out how I can tell what the gearing is before posting it for sale. I did drive it before removing it and it ran well.

" Racing gears " is a vague term.
That could mean face plated gears or different ratios etc... or it could just be what he was told when he got it.
Or he interprets the low 3.09 first that came in early A-Bodies as a racing gear ?
Take the side cover off and take a pic of the gears. And / or count the revolutions for each gear .

And keep in mind, if it truly is a '65 transmission, it has the ball and trunnion output shaft flange; correct only in '65 and older applications. Also uses the one-piece speedometer drive and cable, compatible with early A speedos.

It could mean anything or nothing. He mightta just been runnin his mouth. The only way I know of is to putt the side cover and look.

The only way to know is to pull the side cover and count all the teeth, then compare results to gear ratio charts. 1965 A body transmission would have been built with the 1:1 3.09 ratio gears. As was previously mentioned it would have been built with a ball and trunion rear joint, which may have been converted to 68 style slip yoke tail. As far as racing ratios, direct connection had several different ratio sets available including red stripe gear set.

Thanks for all the help... I did find a sheet that I got with the car when I bought it.. so this lines up with @cpearce comments.

833 4-speed 23 spline 71-74 e- body with T/A road race gearset.

So new question... what is this probably worth?

2.66 first gear.
Actually it a 2.47 1st gear.
1970 AAR and T/As and 1971-1974 23 spline trans got the 2.47 1st gear set.
They have the 3 groove markings in the cluster gear set.

I do not see any evidence of any mods inside such as, Slick Shift, Pro Shift or Face Plating etc..

I do see in the last picture in post #7 that somebody has done some grinding on the B-body shifter mounting pad. I wonder why?

THIS^^^^. My bad. I though he said it was a trunion box and I didn’t see that is was a 71 box.

The 2.47 low box is a close ratio box and
IMO
Not well suited to a streeter unless it has plenty of low-rpm torque. For a typical SBM streeter it will want 4.10s for a starter gear of 10.13
If yur willing to go there (4.10s) you will be rewarded with a quick trip thru the gears and the engine that uses it can also use a cam with a 108LSA, and the trans will keep her on the pipe..
I have had this combo; 360/2.47/4.30s and it was a lotta fun. But no way on God's green Earth would I run that with a low-compression 318 and 3.55s.

Uhh...got a build date? Because I think there's a chance that's a 70 AAR/TA box.
