December last year I took my Dart back from a shop after the bill went crazy. It would only run hot wired. Fast forward for now and I need to replace my 7 1/4 with an 8 3/4. I saw some online for 4K+(if only I had more money). Motor is stock, 350hp assumed but would like to have 500hp or so later. Buy one and have it rebuilt? Costs? Is remanufactured worth it? Just for street but plan to put my foot in it a lot. 3.55 or 323? Thanks in advance.

Start a wanted thread here on FABO. Complete 8 3/4 rears come up for sale from time to time. They go for good money but $1000-1500 is the going rate.

2000 for a good used A Body limited slip would not be unreasonable.

The east coast guys will argue with me as their version of good is a bit different than west costers.

Housing alone in GOOD shape 600 to 1200. Axles 100 to 200, center section 300 to 600, brake hardware 100 to 200, U bolts and shock plates another 100 to 200.

Adds up fast.

By the way, nice dart convertible. Not a lot of them left.

Thanks. What condition for that kind of money?
Use the search function and look through old ads. You will see what kind of parts are available and for what price. Because it's a big piece you may want to check out car shows and/or swap meets in your area. Freight to ship a rear end across the country could be a deal breaker.

I have 3 complete 8 3/4 rear on here, ready to bolt in for A-body. Original rears, not cut down form E,B or c bodies. lmk if this is something you would like to move forward with. Thanks.

Sorry, screwed up reply Dana67Dart. Thx for the compliments. I was fortunate enough to be the second owner and have had it since 98. Was numbers matching but I destroyed the trans case. 24 years later i'm older and a lot smarter(industrial mech by trade)

4K seems pretty steep no matter where you live. You can order them new for less, built to your specs.
Are you staying 5x4 bolt circle, or going to 5x4.5? Drum or disc brakes? Type of limited slip unit and gears? It all adds up, and if you drop 2K+ on a stock rear and then start replacing parts, it adds up fast. Bearings, gaskets, gears, brake hardware, axles if you're changing patterns... Plus don't forget the additional ancillary items- U bolts and shock plates (different from your 7.25 stuff), a new driveshaft (shorter than the one for your 7.25), and probably leaf springs... etc. etc.
For pricing on new stuff, check Dr. Diff and Moser engineering for starters:
Mopar A-Body 8 3/4" Housing & Axle Package (doctordiff.com)
8 3/4 Mopar Stamped Housing & Axle Package - Moser Engineering
By the time you add up the cost of buying a used rear that needs rebuilding, buying all necessary parts, rebuilding or paying someone to rebuild it, buying new right off the bat starts looking a lot more attractive.
Or a nice rebuilt one from a member, of course!

5 x 4.5 for sure, front is already done, everything new w/discs. I want one ready to install depending on condition. I have other repairs/upgrades that can't be funded if I spend it all on the rear end. I need to do some research on the site. Thought I looked at both those sites already but will look again. The 4K+ mention by me was for all new. thx

FYI the moser housing is a Ford 9" housing cut and drilled for a Mopar center section. IMHO looks tacky

If your going to end up with what looks like a Ford 9" go with a 9".

Nice Vert! If you have a converter go for the 3.23. Having said that the 3.55 will get you to the end of a 1/4 mile without over reving. Mine is a 3.55.

I buy $50 c body 8.75's or usually get them free, cut them down re weld ends on and just buy aftermarket axles, or can buy stock ones for 100-200 and then you have a body width for 500 bucks or less and it is the same as a $2000 one.

What wrecking yards are you going to?

I was lucky to find an E body 8 3/4 with track lock 2.75 :( for 350 here in CO.
