I keep seeing notes in the product specs for new heads, intakes, etc…. That say compatible for 383’s ‘66-72…..will there be issues with my 65 383 block accepting things like new aftermarket stuff?

Here is an example from Edelbrock for their intakes…..says 1958-…… in title but 66-72 in description. Or am I reading it wrong?

Probably because of the intake openings matching the heads, they will all fit buy may not be 100% correct with the smaller opening heads...

Are early 383 heads closed chamber ?
If so that may be the difference.

Yes, but they were closed chamber up to 67, the 516 and 915 heads were closed chamber.

Yes they're different. They have different date castings.

there are 2 383 blocks a b and rb the rb is a older casting from the 50's , earlier 50'and 60 heads have rocker shafts that bolt to stands holding them to the head and less valve cover bolts, you would find the tall block 383 in a lot of trucks

Cam kits show as fitting 67 and up. The reason is that the lifters in pre 67 big blocks had a smaller cup and used a pushrod with a tapered end and a smaller ball on the lifter end and standard size ball on the rocker end. I ran into that on my 66 361. Luckily Kim had a brand new set of early style Johnson lifters. I could have used newer lifters if I had switched to newer style pushrods which had the standard ball size on each end.

Makes sense. I was thinking it might have something to do with the valve train.
