Dumb question, and I'm a newbie to cars but I'm getting ready for a summer road trip and going over all the essentials.
No issues at all with my transmission shifting, but when checking the dipstick per the FSM in HOT and NEUTRAL i get two reading on my dipstick. One side marks fluid very high up (overfilled) while the other side marks fluid very low (Add 1 pint).

I don't want to overfill the trans. Which side of the dipstick should i trust and is there a specific way to insert the dipstick? Thanks

It SHOULD be reading the same on both sides. I would get something to clean the dipstick really well with. Maybe it's got something on it that is making the erroneous readings. As for the proper way to insert, it should go in with the curl on top facing the front of the engine.

No mention of year or type of vehicle, but does the (50 year old?) dipstick have a cold side and or hot side and is it even the correct dipstick?

Thanks for the feedback, its a 1976 Dart 225 with the A904.
It is the original dipstick. There is only writing on one side. I'm not having any issues with the trans shifting, just wanted to get a baseline of where the fluid is settled and how to read it. I'll check later again where the side with the lettering is facing.

Parked on level ground first...
Did you pull the stick,
wipe it dry,
then put it back in,
then pull it to read the level?
That may produce a better reading.

The open end of the stick handle curling from the rear toward the front of the trans.. This should put the info on the stick toward the rear. Put the stick in then pull it straight up with the info facing up. That is your reading. Sometimes the stick dragging on the tube will change the reading from front to back
