I went from a 2bbl 318 with the original cam and a 7.25 2.76 pegleg to a 4bbl and a lunati 10200701 and detonated that pegleg within two years. Yes, it's anectodal and he may not destroy his diff, but the potential is there.

If you want to stick with a small block, I would recommend a 360/5.9. There are tons of them on craigslist and at pick-n-pull places, still attached to the trans.
