How much did a gallon of gas cost when you first started driving?

-
In 75 $8.00 would fill my 69 charger to the brim with premium.

it averaged in the mid $0.70's most of the summer of 86 in central Indiana but i swear there was one night I got leaded for 56 cents. I don't remember seeing leaded after that come to think of it....

About a dollar a gallon,
1973 Saab mech fuel injection. Got it to do a wheelie in reverse one time in high school parking lot facing downhill. Buddy couldn't stop laughing. Heaviest clutch and steering I've ever experienced

I remember my Dad pulling in to a gas station in our 68 Charger RT and if it took $3 to fill it was sucking fumes!!!

In 1979 the year before I started driving gas was around .50 a gallon , by the time I was driving in 1980 it was a dollar. Anyone else remember gas rationing where you could only buy gas on odd or even days depending on your license plate number??? MAN I'M OLD!!!

I remember odd and even plate numbers for days to buy. I worked for a place that had a fleet of vans. We installed cctv and security systems in Beverly hills and places like that. We had a deal with local gas station where we always did bought gas, thay would open up a closed island and we could get gas no matter what day. There were some interesting conversations between customers and gas jockeys as to why we could and they couldn't!!! This was in first "gas crises". 1973 and 74. And you are not that old, I've got you beat, and I'm still here!

To put all this in perspective, in 1972 at 16 years old, my minimum wage job paid $1.65 and hour...

I used to put fuel in my bike by cruising all of the gas stations and putting the last little bit that was still in the hose into my tank.

Ron, I worked in a gas station 1979-1981. During the gas crunch, my dad would drive down at closing time to block one entrance while I blocked the other. People would still drive around back and through the grass. It was awful....unless you had a key to the station and could go in wherever you wanted. Lol.

I did too. 16 years old and telling a log truck driver he could only have 50 gallons to go make a living didn't go over too well.

The funny thing about "rationing" back in the early 1970's is: I still drove everywhere and anywhere I wanted (and so did my family and friends). Which makes me ask the question, was there really a "shortage"? If only one station allowed 10 gallons max, what's to stop one from driving to the next station for another 10 gallons? It seemed like it was just hocus-pocus really.

It was a challenging time! I had a few that could have gone sideways. I too was 16, but I lifted weights and had a perm down to my shoulders so I could scare them off, lol.

Agree. My first job, minimum wage was $1.25, and I could fill my car with regular for $2.50 With minimum wage now at $15, who has a car they can fill for $30 ? My last trip to the gas station I spent $200.

$.33 high test for my '60 Chevy 348..1967 was 17 years old working in Kendall station making $1.50 an hour, off the books of course. There was a station that advertised 4 for a dollar for a long time in the early 60's.. think it was called Skylark gas.
