1965 Dodge Dart Charger (?)

Their family has 6 kids (5 boys, 1 girl) and none of the boys picked up the hobby.

THIS is what I picked up from the original post.
If I were the father, I'd be sadly disappointed in my kids.

They’re all good people. I was friends with most of my wife’s brothers before even meeting my wife (not sure what that has to do with cars). The opportunity is there. I think some have some of the kids have some interest, but haven’t had the time money, motivation, dedication (blah, blah, blah) to jump in.

Did some tinkering today.

Started mocking up a run stand/organize motor and related pieces for install. We mocked it up with an extra slant 6 flywheel. Hoping to find a 273 flywheel—if I can’t I’m the next couple weeks, I will have the slant 6 flywheel modified, or fork over the big bucks for a new RAM flywheel.

Also verified that my o/d trans in the car does not have the smaller 307 bearing. Look out for some creativity on the transmission side of things.

Get a small front bearing main case and swap it in.

We have a 1965 a833. Planning on keeping the ball and trunnion, and doing the slip yoke conversion.

Also dropped off a clutch and slant 6 flywheel at a local clutch shop yesterday. Got the new clutch parts, resurfaced and modified flywheel back this morning.

Got the slant 6 out. Now I’m cleaning up the engine bay. I like all that black paint flaking off to show the original yellow.

Didn’t really intend to scrape the entire bay with a razor blade…but it’s kind of like that itch you can’t scratch… I’ll probably give up at some point…

You've come along way already! That work you doing is time consuming but well worth it after the paint is applayed. If you like to paint it yellow in the rngine bay you can leave it that way and continue driving it. Next step might be..... and so on. Keep up the good work.

Power washing will get most of that black paint off quick.
I definitely should have thought of this before you said something… you saved me hours of work. I spent 20 minutes this evening and made good progress!

Just some Saturday spraying and praying!
Should look decent with a little red motor and finned valve covers in there.

I bought an Eastwood MIG 90. Never welded before (except for 15 minutes, a few years ago). Decided to notch my transmission crossmember for dual exhaust—honestly don’t know if I’m going that route, but I wanted the project.

I made the cut per the TTI instructions, but took too big a bite out. Had to cut out the welds, and start over. The notch ended up much smaller than planned, but it’s back together.

Don’t know if I’d call the welding good, but it was a real good time.

273 has landed. Got it in right as the rain started.

Took the hood off, and installed motor and trans together. Never pulled or installed a motor, and I did both by myself. Was pretty challenging, but got it done. Now I can check that off the bucket list.

Just let me say that your work here is really impressive. For somebody with little previous experience to take all this on is a real inspiration. Good luck with the ongoing project!!!

Good progress! Sorry to see the slant go, but it's still gonna be cool.

Thanks all. Couldn’t do it without FABO. Also lucky to have some good local people to learn from.

The work isn’t as clean as I’d like, but I want to drive the darn thing. There are always more winters.

And @RustyRatRod, still have the slant 6. I’m confident it’ll be used again.

Quick update after a couple months. Chipping away over here.

I put in a new engine and headlight harness from YearOne. Hooked up all the electronic ignition from the slant 6.

Figured I’d try to start it…poured a little gas down the hatch, turned the key, and the sucker fired right off! I wanted to pull gas from the tank, so ended up buying a later 340 pump to carb fuel line (@RustyRatRod’s recommendation on another thread). Had to do a little bending, but it worked great. Now I get to say we have some real hot rod parts installed.

Here’s a short clip with my littlest one right after getting the fuel line hooked up:

So I got it fired, but didn’t have alternator, pulleys, etc. bolted up.

Hate to remind you, but I’ve never done this before—I get everything on. It’s looking good. Attach the alternator bracket. Tighten everything down. Fill up the radiator with water. Starts losing water underneath the alternator. Can’t figure what in the world is going on. All the bad scenarios are going through my head. Then it clicked.

I tightened the belt before tightening the brackets. The tension was keeping the pump from sealing. Went back through, but changed my sequence… no leaking.

Next: I couldn’t get it to idle. Would fire off immediately, but no idle. My father in law stopped by on a Saturday morning. Wanted to hear it fire. He got it where it needed to be. Idled for a good 15 minutes. Stayed cool and sounded pretty happy.

Next: my existing clutch linkage had been cobbled together. After a couple order, I SHOULD be in good shape. New z bar and clutch fork from Brewers. Need to finish putting that all together.

I think my punch list is down to:
- Clutch linkage
- Driveshaft fabricated to go from flange output a-833 to 8 1/4 rear.
- Exhaust

And I’m sure more will show up along the way! I don’t give consistent updates here, but it’s mostly because I’m finding all the answers on FABO before I have to ask.
