Ok ! I have a 400 hp crate in my duster, the 727 is going away or might need to be openned up for an inspection : i was wondering if i can put a stock stock 904 with a 2 200 stall , to at least run this summer with it , i hear 250x opinions that a 904 can take 400 hp all day and some folks are saying that it can take more than 300hp , i want an honest opinion if possible , not aftermarket stuff , stock 904 vs 400 hp small block : yes or no ; thanks guys !
 
an all stock one? i guess it depends how bad you are planning on beating on it.. a properly built one (nothing exotic) will have no problem holding up behind that. but an all stock one is a crap shoot.
 
IMO- lead footing a 400HP 904 would take a "built 904", where-as lead -footing a 400HP 727 would only take a quality built stock tranny.
 
If you drive it like an adult human with an occasional WOT application, I wouldn’t worry. I wouldn’t plan on 70-80 foot burnouts with it.

If you have some time left on the 727, it might be a good idea to step up (If $$$ allows) and build up the 904. Tell the shop it’s going to see a honest 500 hp. Have them out in a shift kit and add a deep pan. Call it a day.

How well does the car hook? A 904 is a great race trans but guys running big HP through them have built the trans for it. The parts to do it are very expensive.
The main draw back with the 904 is the small clutches. The plus of a 904 is the rotational weight is much less than the 727.
 
400 hp isn't going to do squat to a decent parts rebuilt 904.

Put in your stocker 904 and run it. Nobody knows condition or use of the trans except you. Could last a long time.
 
My 380hp crate did 400hp on the dyno and 440 torque 12 years ago , the duster is 2800 pounds and is a street driving machine , couple of burnouts here and there but im not beating the car up all the time ,
 
If you already have a 727 why change? The parts to fix your 727 are really not that expensive and the 727 can be fixed very quickly. Just my 2 cents.

U want break stuff until u have traction / street tires & spinning will let the 904 Survive
 
Buddy has about 50K and a least 2 dozen quarter mile runs on a 904/999 (low gear) behind a 408 Magnum stroker with 2.76 axle in a 3900+lb Aspen wagon. Shifts like new.

I would keep the 727. Easier because u have it. No modifications. Remove, rebuild and install. Doesn’t get any simpler. I could also build u 1. Kim
