Hi all, trying to finish up the rear harness in Dads 67 FB. When replacing the rear pass side courtesy lamp harness I also removed the rear defrost motor. The feed wire on this thing is LONG. Well over 4' of wire, and that is just when laying the "excess" out from mount hole. I believe the "route " the wire takes is up pass side, under the dash and obviously over to dash switch on drivers side. My factory schematics show it as possibly a "20w resistance cable". Can I shorten this wire? In my mind there us no need for 4' of the extra. I would like to trim 3' off, BUT dont want to alter the functionality of the resistance cable.....long winded sorry...

I have never seen one of these installed. Are you sure of the routing? I am surprised that it is not routed with the main loom, across the top of the gas tank and following the loom down the drivers side. Maybe that would take up the "extra" wire you have. Does it get power from the fuse block?

Yes I'm sure....well pretty sure lol. The long "resistance" wire appears to be same length as the ones in the links above. It was there when I replaced the original pass side courtesy light harness(fuel sender also)
Also when I replaced drivers side courtesy light, tail lights and trunk light, the rear defog wire wasnt there. The factory switch is located far lower left of dash. I haven't traced the power from switch to fuseblock, but 99% that's what feeds switch, then from switch along g bottom of dash over to pass side.
Sorry....long winded again lol.

I think, guessing here, most if not all 67s, or maybe those ordered to northern climates, got the rear metal window trim with the defrost vent, whether one ordered rear defrost or not.

That way, a dealer could easily install rear defrost by punching a rough hole in the rear panel, covering it with a standard speaker grill, and run the wire up to the dash without the need to disturb the factory harness on the driver's side.

I say 67 as it's an oddball year, and I don't have any direct experience with 68/69 cars.

My 67 has the oval hole in the metal trim, but no rear defrost.

The wires run along the drivers side sill with the other wiring, across the back and then to defrost motor. Do NOT cut the resistance wire!! See attached factory wiring diagram.
