Under all that ugly paint I found the original Petty Blue. This is that 72 Duster 340 3 speed manual I picked up this weekend. Wanted to sand that old paint off to see what I had. I've got some better doors off a 72 Gold Duster that will go on it. That's why I didnt waste paper sanding down those original doors. Gonna sand blast the engine bay tomorrow.

That's great, I'm really glad to see you are planning on saving it. More pics please!

It appears that 340 three speed manual cars are more common than would be expected. I know of two dusters locally equipped likewise and have an uncle who has the complete three speed setup out of a totaled out '71 340 demon rust bucket he parted out. I always thought the close ratio a-230 would have been a lot of fun with a set of 4.30-4.56 gears.

VIA Wikipedia...One of the most distinctive features of the No. 43 car is its color. Petty Blue, as it's called, was created by the Petty family. According to Richard, the color was created by accident when they didn't have enough white or dark blue paint to cover the entire car. The resulting mix of white and blue proved to be very popular and remains on the No. 43 car to this day.[5] Rumors state that Richard Petty would not allow STP to sponsor his car unless he could keep it painted blue. A compromise was reached to paint the car half Petty Blue and half STP Red. Thus was born one of the most famous paint schemes in racing history.

What type of Blaster do you have?
BTW My son had a 72 Duster, back in the late 80s, with a factory 318 2B and factory 3 speed on the floor. We had a great time "tricking" it out...a real hot rod when we got done with it.

15 years ago I bought a 1972 Challenger Rallye in Petty Blue. Ever since I sold it after two years I still wish that I've kept he. I just love the Petty blue color.
I've read about Corporate blue. Was that the same color and was it given that name?

In '72 Plymouth called it B-3 "Basin Street Blue". Thus the "TB3" on FC7Demon340's fender tag. Dodge called B-3 "Blue Streak".

Not called Petty blue. Petty blue was a different color, on your Duster in 72 it’s called Super Blue. I think Dodge called it Basin street blue, or it could be the other way around. I painted my Dart Super Blue over 30 years ago, great color.

The paint store has it under Super Blue for 72-73
That is an incorrect name for 1972 B-3. B-3 was called "Basin Street Blue" on a '72 Plymouth. B-3 was always "Blue Streak" on '72 Dodges. (I edited this post, removing all references to '73 cars. The names may have been changed in '73).

You have to look under 1973 Dodge. 72 is debatable as to what they called it. Same color
A friend had a 72 Demon, and we called it Super Blue.
Another guy had a Scamp that color, still called it Super Blue.
I don’t think Chrysler referenced it as Petty Blue?

Chrysler never called it "Petty Blue". Maybe Dodge did call it "Super Blue" at some point. But the O.P. has a '72 Plymouth, so in his case it's "Basin Street Blue".

The "Corporate Blue" is a different color. I do not think any production cars were painted that color. It is coded only as "12785" on the PPG charts from around '68 to around '73. If you can find a chip of it you'll see that it's darker and not as vibrant as the B-3 color.

I remember a magazine cover for Hot Rod or Car and Track, way back in the sixties..."What's New in Petty Blue." Richard Petty's 64 Barracuda drag car.

I'm not sure why people think they're going to find Petty Blue on a body tag or on a paint chip. There is no code for it. It's a proprietary blend and only Richard Petty Enterprises knows how to make it. The legend goes that one day they didn't have enough dark blue or white paint to cover Lee Petty's whole car, so they mixed the two together and came up with Petty Blue. It was never a factory color. Am I 100% sure? Nope. But, Level Cross, NC is right down the highway from me and I've been to the Petty garage that is/was in Mooresville, NC.

They did call it "corporate blue" a few times.

as well as several other names.

Who's they? I've heard everyone say that corporate blue, street basin blue, whatever blue, doesn't exactly match. There might be a reason for that. Petty Enterprises owns the proprietary mix. Plymouth can call their blue whatever they want. The one thing they can't call it is Petty Blue. They do not own the actual mix ratios for Petty Blue.
