Things went pretty smoothly other than a couple of things. The intake bolt holes on the used Victor I bought were slotted, but the wrong way, needed relieved the other way. Had the intake on and off several times…finally, it fit. Grind, try, grind try.
The registers on the heads that go over the dowel pins are SNUG. Rod had told me to be aware of that. One head needed a bit of persuasion, the other just a good wiggling to seat all the way down.
Get the car running , the idle is wildly swinging all over between about 1000 to 1600 rpm with timing set correctly(34) dizzy is locked. And I hear the exhaust popping…yikes..
Sprayed brake clean all over the likely culprits, intake, carb gaskets, spacer.. no change in idle.
Pop a plug out( installed new NGK race plugs like the old ones I took out) LEAN.
When new plugs look like that, Just idling the car….
Bigger, way bigger intake. Bigger hole, less sucking on the nipple I guess.
Called a buddy and ran it by him, where are the mixture screws a…. Duh, didn’t think of that.all between 1/ 1.25 turns out.
Moved them all out to 1.5 turns, it’s better. Ended up two full turns out to make it back to loping nicely like it was before, and the idle settling in nicely between 1100-1200 rpm’s. Fixed.!! My buddy said he has been out to two turns before on smallblocks, not a big deal.
The I Wire alt doesn’t excite till 1000 rpm’s, so I like it charging as much as it can, and have never liked a low idle with any performance cam, even a 3/4 race cam like mine..lol
Had a stick on wheel weight fall off over the winter on the driver front tire, need to put that back on, install new belts, and the rear tires are pretty sketchy to take on another outing, especially a long weekend of racing Memorial Day weekend when I plan to get it out and see what she’s got. New tires are in the cards before then.
Btw, the pushrods came out exactly, exactly the same as they were with the old setup . Surprising, but was a nice break, after all the messing around with the intake.
Something else I learned about intake gaskets I had never thought about( guess I am pretty dumb)..but I had a set of 62 thou thick 1213 Felpro’s. I called Greg at Superformance gaskets to have a different thickness on hand as I had the heads shaved to get to my desired 61cc. And had no idea of the history of the intake. I told Greg all this, and he insisted I get a set of 47 thou gaskets, not something more like 30 thou like I suggested, to have a big difference to cover doing the install.
He pointed out that there are two gaskets, not just one, when I told him there is only 15 thou difference between 47 and 62… actually there is 30. EACH gasket is 15, and there are two, guess I had never looked at it that way..again.. dumb.
His 47’s were what I used, nice gaskets too.

that 1000 rpm for the alternator is alternator speed. the alternator spins way faster than the crank. you can figure it out by measuring one. i dont have any small block stuff here or id measure it up for you. im thinking 3:1 ratio. tghe alternator turns 3 ties faster than the crank.

didn’t know that, thought I had heard above 1000rpm. Still like my idle above that anyhow, but thanks for that. Learn something on here all the time

I’m glad everything worked out good, now go make some hits.

This is with the new BPE heads right? What do you expect? And how many big changes were made?

yes, new BPE heads.
Only changes were heads and intake
Hoping to see 3 tenths gain over what I had. Don’t know if that is realistic, low guess, high guess.??
Do wish I had more camshaft to really take advantage of the head flow . My cam after lash is like 540 lift.

Only one way to find out.

Were you able to make that deal on the bigger headers?

no, saw a set like those installed..they hang too low to my liking, tough to get car on and off my tilt deck trailer, and street driving.
Sticking with ones I have, at least for this season

Got an issue with an intermittent loud shotgun like sounding backfire/ exhaust. Did it twice just idling around my parking lot. Running the car like 10 minutes. Idles fine. It’s a very loud crack
Trying to figure out what it is

My stroker small block did that when I first fired it up this spring after doing a top end tear down over the winter. Distributor was a hair off and after moving it about a 1/4 inch clockwise the pop went away. But I use a crank trigger ignition set up so the distributor literally only distributes the spark to the cylinders.

What’s stopping you from upping the camshaft? .640ish SR would be “interesting”.

it indeed would be. What is stopping me right now is I have an 8.75 rear in the car, and the car is heavy.
My intentions were to go Dana first, then maybe upgrade the motor. I did this backwards.
Frankly, I am getting old and don’t like bending over a hood anymore, and working on it in general. I just like to race. Some of my decisions here are going in the wrong direction…lol
The other thing is money. I own a business, it’s in my wife’s name. I use my SSI to fund my racing, and our vacation. I make just enough to not pay any tax, we file married separately. Everything else is the business. So this season,I have shot my wad pretty much regards upgrades. Now I have to pay fuel and entry fees rest of summer, and couple out of state racing trips. And our vacation the month of January out of the country.
I have zero doubt I could put the right roller in the car, hack the inner fenders for Headman 1 7/8 race headers, and probably get this thing in the 9’s. But I have already done that, have no interest at this point in doing it again , getting license, fire suit, more maintenance, pushing a stock block I don’t want to drive over, Yada, Yada.
At this point, other than a Dana, only upgrade I might consider is 1 7/8 TTI headers.
I have said all along this isn’t gonna be an all out deal, and it’s not. Hopefully I am happy how it runs.
I will tweak it and get it to run as good as it can

I should probably have added..I kinda already know what it COULD run.
That Drag week Duster lives near me. Has identical shortblock I have, except I milled my heads, to keep my compression, he didn’t and runs pump gas.
His car is 150 pounds lighter, has 1 7/8 TTI headers on it, same intake I have, but mine is ported, his is just gasket matched. He has a 640-650 ish lift roller, I have a smaller duration 565 lift flat tappet.
His has been( that I know of) 10.22 at 132. He is, I understand, having a trick super Victor fully worked to install, and sent out his convertor to get adjusted.
His should easily dip in the 9’s, especially in good air. Rod thinks it will go 134+. Impressive car, he drove it over 1000 miles and it laid down impressive numbers that week.
Mine isn’t going to get any lighter, Dana will make it 3400 pounds. I am 320+ as driver. And I have a flat hood, no hood scoop, I like it stock looking at the expense of getting fresh air to it.
If mine will dip in the high 10.40’s as is to about 10.50, I will be tickled

You won't notice the extra weight of the Dana.

Finally got it right.
Damn dizzy cap just plain doesn’t like to seat correctly.
Had two other guys the last several days fool with it and throw in the towel.
Went out a little while ago, messed with it for probably 45 minutes, finally got it to where it doesn’t move around.
Took the car out on the road and put my foot in it….
All is 100% well. Super happy, that misfire had been bugging me since Sunday afternoon
