I saw a few threads on this from awhile ago, but it didn't seem that a solution ever got posted.

I have a 96 5.9 that I am using the timing cover off of a 68 318. ( Going into a 71 dart) As far as I know both cranks and everything else on both motors was standard, nothing special on either. I believe the timing cover isn't aftermarket as it has factory casting numbers and the pentastar on it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's originally from that motor. ( Timing tab is on driver's side)
The PRW sportsman balancer isn't going to clear the timing tab, it's right on it and it hasn't been torqued down yet.
Has anyone who had this issue ever ended up resolving it?
Also for everyone doing a magnum with v belts who DIDN'T have this problem, what balancer did you use?

I kept v-belts but I used a 1970 timing cover. The timing marks are cast into the cover on the driver's side. It's a pain to see them when timing, but it's doable. I painted marks to help.

Is the oil slinger on the crank behind the timing cover. That makes up a little space. It goes between the bottom timing gear and the harmonic damper.

Ah ok, there's something. My timing tab is on the driver's side! I thought it was earlier that they changed sides.

So if I remember correctly, it was nearpar who had this issue with a 70's cover and the pro products 80012 balancer, but that thread went off the rails quickly

I had that issue with my 408 build, did not have an oil slinger.
There was enough meat on the cover to make clearance for the Trck Flow balancer.

This thread is useless without pics.gif

Just enough to have about 1/8 of an inch of flat at the radius of the timing marks parallel to the balancer.

Back in the early 1980’s NHRA started enforcing an aftermarket balancer and the on I bought hit my timing cover. I made a shim to slide on the crankshaft and it worked great. ATI now offers a very nice shim that summit now sells.

No guys.
The engine turns clockwise.
If the line represents tdc... the 30 is ...30 before the line comes round to tdc/0.
Riiiight?

Thanks J for mentioning that.. I was wondering, but I think Mike means the hash marks are oriented correctly, but they are placed closer to the outer edge of balancer vs the inner edge(closer to engine)
