Cleaning up for paint and noticed a rivet missing. Looks like it was missing for awhile. The blade feels firm so run it, or figure a way to fix, or replace? I’m sure the factory didn’t leave it out for balance.

Probably put a small bolt with lock tight and run it as long as it doesn't affect the balance. What you want to look for are cracks in the blades.

I would have it magnafluxed to check for cracks. You don't want it turning loose, it will cause a "lot" of damage. Ask me how I know.

Replace it, it's cheap insurance. If the blade comes apart it will cause more damage than what a new blade will cost you. Having it magnafluxed is a waste of money unless you have a exact style rivet to install, anything else will throw the blade out of balance and probably cause water pump failure, belt breakage.

This I have seen wgat happens when they loose a blade. And also seen water pumps ruined from out of balance.
I grew up on the same street as. Dealership. I saw all kinds of new cars and crazy repairs. It was ( is a Chevy Dealer)
New name but still in Biz.

Sounds like replacing is the best, I probably knew that just wanted a few more thoughts. Thanks guys, not worth the worry.

Back in the days of NAS Miramar, my part time job at the auto hobby shop. Guy came in with about a 67 Goat. Had a hole in the hood, looked like an axe, only it came from BELOW. Fan blade

Pretty scary. I’d fix it. I don’t think you have to worry about balance much that close to the center of rotation.

340's usually came with a torque drive fan. Did you change it to the fixed unit? I am considering doing the same thing. What are your thoughts on it's cooling ability.

The factory did balance these fans. They did it by adding a flat washer and riveting it on.
Never saw that.

IMHO, you could buy a steel rivet and have it properly swedged on.
Sky scrapers, bridges, ships, planes, and fan blades have had rivets in use for more than a century. The process is not particularly sophisticated.

THAT BEING SAID... for the money a replacement would bring piece of mind. You might even find one with a more agresdive pitch.

replace all of them, balanced again!
Good point.

My bet is the manufacturer did not balance the fans.

The rivets would all be the same weight within a very small tolerance.

The blades the same and punched out of steel.

The center, punched out of steel.

Now maybe they weighed the blades and used 7 blades that were all within a specific weight range.

This H code Demon was a drag car when I got it and came with the fixed fan. I figured if it worked for him, I would just leave it. Since I'm replacing it now, I'm on the fence as well with the factory radiator.

213 fan? 68 340, didn’t have a clutch drive, direct drive.

You drag car will be faster without that solid 7 blade fan. The do move lots of air.
