340 7-blade fan rivet missing

You might be able to find a new rivet
McMaster-Carr

If that is a particular fan number you want, see if you can find another.

I do not know the history here, I think it had been welded.

This H code Demon was a drag car when I got it and came with the fixed fan. I figured if it worked for him, I would just leave it. Since I'm replacing it now, I'm on the fence as well with the factory radiator
Keep the factory radiator, reset the fan to a factory setup, and not have any cooling issues. If you want, swap out the fixed fan for a clutch fan that has a more aggressive fan pitch

I'd put a new rivet in that so quick you'd never know what happened.

Stop by your local truck body shop and have them pull in a "Huck" rivet in there for you.

Peterbilt dealerships have the right tools and rivets too get it done.

Many years ago I read in the Syracuse Herald Journal that a local man had is arm nearly amputated when in fan blade broke. He ended up loosing his arm and I’m always leery of them when working on cars. It might have been a million to one shot to happened again but why take the chance. Replace the fan, it might be cheaper in the long run for both you and your car.

I have posted before I knew a guy that had a 396 Chevelle that was making an odd noise and he had hood up revving it up when a fan blade came off and went through his chest killing him. I wouldn't take chances, Joe

So sorry to hear about your friend.

^^ Old aircraft mechanic here.. look up "plane of rotation"... & stay out of it.

I had a blade give way on my old 69 charger it hit the underside of the hood and put a huge crease

IMHO, I don't think that it's something worth messing with, I'm sure that there are guy's here that have the ability and tools to fix it,but would it be as good as factory?

It'll be cheaper to buy a new one then to have a peterbilt dealership do it for you.

Put in a hot rivet and pound it over then. That's how they used to build bridges and sky scrapers.

Besides you should have some friends in these trades. Go help them out once in a while, it's a two way street, it's a lot more fun, and you don't have to pay out the big bucks everytime you turn around if you help each other.

Now days it's how much does it cost . . that keeps you working for the man, instead of playing with the mopars in the garage with your friends helping each other out.

I understand and agree with what you're saying 100% and very well put,but those rivets are pressed in. To much heat makes the metal brittle.

You put the rivet in hot and the fan is room temp. Throw in the hot rivet, set the head on an anvil and pound it over with a 3 lb engineering hammer.

When it cools down it will be tighter than a SOB . . .

And the rivet will be strong as you just work hardened and realigned the molecules and relieved the stress at the same time from the pounding.

Win, Win !

Understand that

But they have a friend with a lathe that will make that rivet just for the fun of it.
I know of one person with a lathe, but he doesn't do anything for free, says he's not Santa claus and sadly he's not much into swapping work.

We grew up in a time where we share with our friends. When someone needs something you go all in to make it happen for them.

They return the favors in ways you never dreamed could happen. As time goes on and these friends become more and more successful, they like to help out when they can and when they see the need to rise to the occasion.

It is equivalent to them flexing their muscles and showing you what they can do now.

We need to get back to theses times and this line of thinking with our government screwed up so bad. We can depend on our good friends and associates and make good things happen for each other.

____________

Happened again this Winter, checked out this Diesel Pusher RV for my MN buddy, that was located here in Florida.

Needed to make sure it was good and that it could make the road trip back to MN for him with no issues.

He enlisted me for the task, I said yes I am all in, whatever you want.

His road trip back went off without a hitch, no problems.

So here I am on the other end of the County still doing favors for my buddies. It's all good.

Geez, this isn’t brain surgery, if threw away every part on my car that wasn’t perfect, there wouldn’t be anything left. Put a bolt & a nut on it & center punch the end of the bolt good so it can’t come loose. Poor mans rivet….

Yeah I don't get it. It's like everybody wants to go hide under the kitchen table over a missing rivet. Clean it up, look at it GOOD with a magnifying glass and if you see no cracks, make another rivet, nut and bolt....whatever.
