Anybody Ever Seen This Before?

Not trying to second guess you but did you pull the distributor and turn the camshaft? No blue spots close to the cam bearings
I'm going to inspect it more closely tomorrow. It got dark on me, plus I really overdid it and feel like two pounds of crap on a one pound bag tonight. This pisses me off so I want to get it done and back running for Terius. He didn't deserve this. I sure as hell ain't bulletproof, but so far, I don't see any indication it was anything that I worked on.

Well good luck on it. I had the cam bearings clocked wrong on a 289 and it caused a lot of problems. And the guy had a lot of engines under his belt so things get screwed up sometimes.

I've clocked some wrong myself, but thankfully I caught it before I assembled the engine. I'm pretty sure these are ok as it has good oil to the top, but I'll sure look at everything.

Hey Rob, It's a Beautiful Thang Ya Can help Yer Brother Man, that's what Life's About! And I'll bet that 350 will be Stronger and More Reliable Than EVER, after Ya finish laying Hands on her

Went out a little while ago and inspected everything really close. Cannot see the cam bearings in a small block Chevy, BUT with just the lifters on top of the cam I can turn the cam freely with my index finger and thumb. Also, I installed my Chevy oil pump priming tool and the oil pump turns freely. I even kept flipping it with my index finger and thump until I felt it start to pull oil. So I believe I have confirmed the timing chain set was what caused this whole mess.

He's kinda down about it, but I'll have him happy with it again probably by the end of next week if everything comes in on time. I'm puttin a Comp billet double roller back in it.

This is on my buddy's 71 Chevy truck I've been workin on. It's just a warmed up 350. He blew a head gasket on it and it sat for like 7 years. Local Chevy "guru" built it. He asked me one day while I was still at O'Reilly if I would look at it and see if it was worth fixin. I did and I fixed it. It ran really good. Finally got the brakes where we wanted them and we decided it was time for him to try to drive it some. Third day he was out and came back home, pulled into his parking spot, revved it once and it went POP and quit. Wouldn't restart. Now, I never touched the timing cover. All I did was remove the heads, had them worked, cleaned it all up, put an HV oil pump in because he wanted one and put it all back together. So I got the timing cover off today and here is the carnage. WTH? Cheap parts? I cannot believe the guy didn't put at least a double row chain set in it as cheap as Chevy parts are. I turned the crank by hand and cannot feel any contact with anything whatsoever. I can turn the camshaft, but it is difficult......it does still have all the rockers adjusted, so that accounts for that I believe. I've never seen a crank sprocket shear like that.

Uh, That would be a no.

You can look at the sheared teeth on the crank sprocket and see how crappy the metal is. It's pathetic. If this isn't a good example of not to EVER cheap out on a timing set, I don't know what is. You'll not catch me putting a crappy stock chain on anything and if my customer wants one, they'll get their junk and go elsewhere.

RRR this likely isn't news to you, but for some, a double row chain and gear doesn't have adequate block clearance on Some SBC blocks. Chamfer the are at the 12' o'clock where the chain will rub on the block. This example, dude didn't do it, woulda screwed with ignition timing for awhile, while adding metal mush to the oil. also this other gear set only has a few hours on it, came out of someone's boat, much longer and it'd bee lookin like your findings.

That's what I don't get. This one has been professionally machined at that exact spot, to accept a double row set, which makes even less sense why someone would use the crappiest chain possible. All he was trying to do is save a buck to put in his pocket.

And that, is one of the definitions, of a Crook

What about all that frag that made it into the oil pan not to mention all the fine metal fragments?

@RustyRatRod
“Enquiring minds need to know.”
I got every tooth out of the oil pan with a magnet. I basically reassembled the gear. As for the fine particles, the oil filter is gonna have to do it. This thing ain't gettin no more money throwed at it. So, "it is what it is".

It just depends on what agreement your friend had with the guy that built it. He may have specified a cheap build. Hard to tell from here

Oh yeah. He knows whatever I touch on it is gonna be right. He's cool with it. Richie is bringin the heads in the mornin. They needed all guides and seats too. He put new guides in but, bein the sport Richie is, he GAVE Terius some 2.02s and 1.60s so all he had to do was open the seats up a little more, instead of replacing them, saving that cost. Same price. So now, Terius will have some really nice heads. I got the Comp billet timing set today, too.
