Safe max RPM for bone stock 5.9 magnum

It's not hard to do the math. The weight and the wind will spell it out for you. I know my truck has a 12.9, it went 13 flat first time out against a stiff head wind. I know people there and their CARS were off ET/MPH, so I know my truck was. Now, if you give it a tenth per hundred pounds, plus the wind resistance, 12.4's should be pretty average in a 3k pound A-body.
If your 200,000 mile 360 could run 12.4's, then my 360 should easily run mid 11's.

If it sounds great, and has great oil pressure, holds a steady temp, ,,, ... let 'er eat !!!!!!

Go get 'em !! I'll say this, matching components tuned properly is worth more than a 2500 dollar short block rebuild and a few parts in a Summit cart. Never forget that.

it's not a stock 360 it's a magnum, magnum head works really well, the 380hp create is a stock long block, with 230 cam 4bbl headers is a known low 12 even high 11 if setup right. Few that been dyno made over 400 hp, even with a mild 210 cam made 350-360 hp stock cam around 300 hp. An LA 360 is gonna need more cam to hit 300-360 hp and headed work to get over 400 hp. Why a lot suggests grabbing a running magnum add 4 bbl cam headers for cheap bang for the buck kind of our 4.8/5.3 LS just not as good :)

i like it all except the "just not as good" part of it. LOL. Seriously, those 5.3's straight from the truck to the chevelle are not rockets. They need all the fix'ns + a ebay turbo.

True but 5.3 LS can get 500 hp with just cam and headers, most I’ve seen so far with magnum is 414 hp, magnum is more on par with older 350 vortec, still a great option for us low dollar mopar guys.

You've seen more than me... :)
Factory rating of 270-320 hp and 340 ft trq for the 5.3. If they get 180-230 hp from headers and cam all I can say is wow!

Yes, its not your shopping cart of high dollar speed parts, but how well the combnation is set up

Even the 4.8 can get to 450 + hp, watch some Richard Holdener YouTube vids.

(I think he knows it’s not a LA 360….)
I don’t know the head flow values between the Magnum and Vortec’s. Have a link? I’d say there on par with each other in terms of what they followed.

I’ll have to go back to those videos. I haven’t seen some and it’s been a while since I watched. Just the latest one with the Ford 302 & a series of heads he tested. Baby small cam as well.

The 4.8/5.3 head flow ?
i believe it’s somewhere around 245 cfm, so it would be if a 273/318 came factory with something like eddy heads.

I know this is a Magnum thread, so I'll just say the only 5.3's I've seen go fast were on boost or bottle. But if you pull a 4.8/5.3 out of a Tahoe and ONLY add a cam and headers, you are welcome to come and race the 6.2 LS that's sitting in my driveway that has just under 500 hp. You should be able to go toe to toe... :)

Now back to Magnum talk!! :)

Vortec head flow? 245 cfm @???

If your talking older 350 style vortec then no think there similar to magnum 200-210 cfm, I heard when they design the vortec port it base on ported 350 head, don’t if there’s any truth to that.

@skep419 the valve springs in the stock magnums are junk and barely adequate for the stock roller cam. With a factory intake you’re all done at about 5200. No reason to spin it more than that. If you’re going to keep the stock cam, throw a set of springs on it and you’ll get a few hundred more rpm out of it. It won’t make more power but you can shift a little higher. As they are stock, they’re all done making power way before the safe rpm limit. There are a few shelf comp roller cams that are a really nice upgrade and Holdener has some you tube videos on em.

In the video above he uses a MP 300 crate engine which is just a 5.9 long block with a dual plane and a 750 and some headers.
