Ok so bought demon in Milwaukee, title was clean no branding, sent it off here in Missouri title comes back with replica on it. Called mo dor, she said its too soon to view info call back in week but checks some national registry and says it was labeled a replica in Wisconsin. Called Wisconsin too late allready closed. Called vallenti a reputable restoration shop near Milwaukee that had worked on and appraised the car and was told there's no way a 72 demon can be a replica something isn't right. Any advice?

I've lived in Missouri almost my entire life and the only way they'll legit call it a replica is if it is a kit car.
Just take a breath, there's ways to straighten it up but I bet they'll take care of it by phone.

And, thanks to NMVTIS, cases of long-buried fraud are going to come up more often now.

Man I hope, never seen or heard of a replica title on anything other than something like a cobra replica etc. Wierd

If the VIN was recorded by law enforcement with an issue, try to get your money back from the seller ASAP.

What’s the first 6 letters/numbers of your serial number? Could be a dart sport or duster with the tail panel and front end changed. Kim

My guess is that the previous owner registered the car under the hobbyist plate and it branded the title as replica. A hobbyist plate in Wisconsin is a one time deal. No annual registration. Same with collectors but collector plate has to be oem restored. I'd be checking the vin stampings to make sure it is really a Demon.

Previous owner did have hobby plate I believe, Vin is demon fender tag matches.

By definition it can't be a replica
Unless it is a Dart sport or Duster that has been vin swapped or replicated to look like a 72 Demon. Check your body numbers to make sure they match the vin tag on door and dash. Top of radiator support drivers side and driver side package tray near speaker hole. Should be stamped there to confirm.

Unless I'm mistaken any Vin swap is illegal. And if done to a car doubt anyone would own up?
Everything matches number wise.

Update
Spoke with the Wisconsin dot they said at one time it was branded as a street modified because engine etc was changed, but never as replica and branding was removed and restored to oem specs when collector car plate was acquired. Said national database shows no branding. Currently waiting on Missouri to call back.

The wisconsin site clearly states that the title would be branded.

Missouri has been horribly backlogged at the DMV since Covid. I'm currently awaiting a court date on a ticket I got for driving my vehicle on expired plates, six months after the registration had been logged as accepted by the state, and over a year after I originally mailed it in. What am I supposed to do when my plates don't come in? Start jumping to my destinations?

My last vehicle ('92 Ram) had the title come back in days instead of weeks, because Missouri had farmed basic stuff like that out to license offices throughout the state. Even with a missing property tax document, she emailed about it and I still my title in less than 7 working days.

Somebody probably checked the wrong box or fudge-fingered a couple digits. My 4-cylinder '74 Valiant can attest to that!

Who the hell tells the state that they changed an engine?

Good luck, but I see an attorney in your future. I bought an RV from a BIG RV Dealership in Arizona in 2012. It was used, but it only had 7,000 miles on it. I brought it to Kansas to register and was stonewalled for almost 6 weeks. The sales manager at the dealership in Arizona was LIVID. He said his paperwork had NEVER been turned down before. Kansas was demanding paperwork from them that did not and never did exist in Arizona. The Kansas Highway Patrol (responsible for approving cars brought in from out of state) and the DMV treated me like a car thief trying to register a stolen car. It took 6 weeks to settle. One other time, I bought a nice Mercedes 500SL at a Mecum Auction in Kansas City at a GREAT price. I fixed a few things and then went to register it and sell it. With all of the Mecum paperwork, the same people (Highway Patrol and DMV) treated me like I was trying to register a stolen car. I got into a heated argument with the lady who was telling me the VIN tag was not where it belonged. She had a book showing it was supposed to be on the dash, I showed her on a MERCEDES website where in was not. She did not care. I called Mecum and they guaranteed my purchase and said they would get involved if necessary. I then argued more with the woman, and her manager came out and asked what was going on. She stated her side, and I stated mine. He told her to issue the registration paperwork. I have more stories, but they are all on similar, straight forward purchases. Your purchase has become much more difficult. I see an attorney in your future.

This entire idea of "title branding" is out of hand. The title should reflect a legal car with a legal vin attached to a legal title. PERIOD

Naah. He HAS a title, the car is legally his.
OK. But what does the title say? If he tries to sell it in a few years, and the title says "Replica" on it, He'll likely get a fraction of what the car is worth. Unless he can get that purged and have an actual clean title, he will likely have problems in the future.

Another update, after waiting on phone for an hour with missouri dor spoke to different gal who looked into it and said she didn't know why it was branded a replica, she said she looked on national database and saw nothing on it from Wisconsin, took my name and number said she would turn it over to someone above her to check it out and get back to me. Said be patient may be a while. Don't get the modified street title in Wisconsin.

Worst case, get Vermont tags.

Allright another update, contacted guy I bought car from, he had a pic of title. It's clean no branding. As I thought.
