So what's everyone doing for camshafts these days?

-
I waited 7 months for a howards cam and finally gave up. This was last Sept. Though. Called Herbert cams and had my solid roller in a week. He had cores at this time.
Yep,
It took 7 months to get my cam from Howard's.
But it was a no hurry deal I'm still not ready to put that Engine together.
The one nice thing is they did not charge my card until it shipped.
It's hit n miss currently,
I found a solid flat tappet cam in stock at Lunati recently and bought it right up!
Crower has some cams in stock also.

8 months later I'm still waiting for my solid roller from Racer Brown. No cores available. Same for my Molnar 4" crank. I'm moving back to Florida this fall, so it looks like my Swinger will be winched into a covered trailer and sent south. I'm praying parts will be available soon.

@RAMM I just had a set of Scat rods delivered from DIX performance out of Edmonton...they may have more

Like the thread title states--I am trying to slap together a decent 450hp 360 based off of a 5.9 Magnum I have here. This build is a stop gap build just to get my truck up and moving. Looking for some SCAT I-beams--NADA ZILCH anywhere... Ok so I want to use a hydraulic roller cam and try some "things" with the lifters. I want something decent with somewhere between 230-246 @ .050" duration-decent lobe lift and at this point I don't care about the LSA. I have searched ALL my vendors and the only stock is hydraulic flat junk, or really mild basically stock hydraulic rollers. So I check Summit--same deal, check E-Bag same , Call Hughes and ask Glenn I believe his name was , asked him right away what cams he had in stock for small block--he says ZERO and have 100+ on B.O. Goes on to tell me that their supplier hasn't had cam cores since November and they don't have a clue when the next order will come in--great! As a side note I called Mahle for a set of SBC pistons--nothing special and was told 16 week wait!! I thank the good lord for such a good job--I'd be homeless by now if I had to rely on this thankless trade for my main income. So does anyone have a used or unused cam sitting on their shelf for sale? Good rods? EQ heads with LA bolt pattern? I have everything else to get this project off the ground and would like to create a thread considering I am dying to use my TR and modded carbs. If the camshaft was hairy enough I might even target 500HP. Our evil overlords have done such a fine job of crushing the economy and marching us towards complete enslavement. I really enjoy paying 2X, 3X even 4X for just about everything while.... Sorry for getting off topic. Just need a few parts. J.Rob
RAMM please define "things " that you are going to try with a Hyd roller.
Thanks in adavance

Oregon cam has billets in stock. I ordered in late March and had my cam a month later.

I've got an idea to limit the plunger travel on the stock roller tappets I've been dying to try. J.Rob
Good luck I failed in every attempt to limit the plunger travel with the Comp Cams Hyd roller setup in my 340. No matter what I tried it was like putting a governor on the throttle. Their retrofit Hyd rollers a junk, never again.
I replaced them with Morel solid roller lifters, man did it wake it up, I had to turn the rev limiter down.

Nice!
I'm building a sbc for a friend
And using a hydraulic roller cam with solid roller lifters.
After watching Engine Masters do it (season 4 episode 48.)
I figured sure why not just tight lash them and no more hydraulic lifter issues!
It's also interesting to me anyway,
I spoke with someone at Erson cams about solid roller lifters on hydraulic roller cam
He said yes they do it all the time just set them to .006 to .008 hot
Spoke with a guy at Howard’s he did not recommend it at all...
Well I guess we'll see how it holds up.
Mike

Some of the roller lobe profiles are compatible with a solid or hydraulic lifter. Bi-lobes :)

I tried setting them @.006 hot - thats a *****.
Im old and slow and I think the engine was shedding off to much heat by the time I got done setting all the valves. I find it easier to set them all at zero lash on the base circle of the cam cold. No lash but still able to spin the pushrods with your finger tips.

Thank You, Rob. I'll send you a PM. Lightening strikes twice. An ESL with no insurance came down the sidewalk and hit my truck at 50 MPH. Ruby is a total loss, but no one was killed this time.

Cylindrical insert
There's a 295deg Lunati Solid cam 3 ft. from Me that wouldn't hold a valve adjustment on the BB Olds it was in, the "solid" lifters were actually just that, a hyd. unit w/a hardened tubular spacer. Did not hold up well, JRob's on the right track...

I dont get it
If you are going to lock up a hydraulic roller lifter with a puck why not just use a solid roller and take avantage of the weight savings?
I believe the goal here is to limit the amount of plunger travel, not " lock-up", there is performance & a bit of safety in doing this.

We (Myself and JRobb) have the same idea worded differently. Let’s look at the posts;

Cylindrical insert

Think spacer/puck. J.Rob
A spacer/ puck. If we look at the shape of a puck, it is round and has a thickness. ****! I just described a cylinder.

On the Olds engine.

I have no idea what’s what on a BB Oldsmobile nor do I care. It’s the last big block is ever touch.

Are “We” using a Hyd. roller cam” or is he using a Hyd. roller cam? Secondly I was responding to his post on what his thoughts were on the subject. I’m doing no such thing.

I have also noticed in the industry standard and short travel lifters. Have fun with that one and discuss it with the inventors and users.

With that said, why would “YOU” limit the travel of a Hyd. cam? Why didn’t you get the right cam to begin with.

Same thing happened to me. RRR gave me the secret, lol.

Look at the very bottom of the home page for a Red Square. Click on it to go to the secret cam pages.

Big Thanks! For the help.
RRR has posted that up before, the page with all the numbers. Shout out to RRR!
