Maybe not a simple linkage adjustment. Bear with me. Had my working 904 on my LA and swapped to my fresh Magnum. While it was out I replaced both shifter shaft seals. I did the seal swap from the top of the trans and the shaft did drop down into the trans and I was able to get it back up with a magnet. I noticed that I could retrieve it at different detents but I got it back to the correct notch position (see pic) and it looks same position as the service manual.
I go to fire the mill and the car will only start in Reverse. I get through break-in (sounds great) and now I figure it's a linkage adjustment issue. loosen linkage, Slap Stik in park, trans lever all the way rearward, retighten. Now it only starts in Neutral. Still sounds like a linkage issue but what am I missing? Is it possible the shaft is at the wrong detent? The flat on the arm and arm position look good to me. Thoughts?
Thank you.

The rooster comb will hit the neutral safety switch in 2 positions. Take out the switch and feel inside whats going on. you can defeat the switch. IIRC the 2 fingers touch the park/neutral switch.

Thanks pishta. I guess I gotta snuff the rooster. Humor me please. Where is this located? Internal or external to the trans?
Edit....I see the pic is for a 62-65. Is my 72 the same?

Shown in Neutral. Reverse is the detent area of the comb between the two grounding contact points.

So....looks like when I brought the shift shaft back up it was at the wrong detent. Agreed? If so will the service manual show the correct position? Not sure how detailed it gets.

Wait.....is it possible I have the 3 wire in the wrong way (upside down)?
Edit...wires exit towards passenger side.
Another issue it could be is that when I dropped the K with the engine/trans, the 3 wire got hung up and had tension on it.
Maybe I boogered it up effecting the NSS or wiring.

It's the angle the picture is taken from. It's above the shift lever with room to spare however I will be adjusting the KD linkage once I test drive.

Back on this again. Back in April I was able to get the car to start in Neutral only via linkage adjustment and I was OK with that but now I need to have the car inspected and want to make this right. I removed the NSS and peeked into the trans. Trans in the Park position with contact visible, shifter in Park and still no start. Moved the trans to Neutral with contact visible, shifter in Neutral and car starts. Shifter selector appears to be off some but is locked in at D, and P. I tried moving the shifter around in the Park position but could not find a spot where it will start. There is no adjustment on the (slap stik) shifter.

GOT IT!!!! Turned out to be a linkage adjustment. Disconnected the linkage with the shifter in the Park position and was still able to move the transmission shift shaft slightly rearward even though it was positively in the park position detent. I then made sure that there was full rearward pressure on the shifter linkage and tightened down. Starts in Park and Neutral only and the shifter PNRD21 line up much better. No the NSS wiring is not staying as pictured.
New issue. I noticed that I get forward tire rotation in Neutral with wheels off the ground. Gotta figure that out now.
