"EQ" Magnum cylinder head differences

Got my heads from P.I.E. (Performance Injection Equipment).

For those that are interested....

Clearly the Chinese heads, but they seemed to have done a pretty decent job with the stainless 2.02 intake valves and hardened seats, bronze guides, and minor chamber unshrouding and bowl blend. These are only their level 1 heads, but I think they'll work pretty well for my build. Supposed to flow 270.

We'll see how they work I guess.

What do they charge for a set of heads done like that?
 
New castings, bronze guides, SS valves, 2.02” intake, upgraded springs/retainers, some CNC porting....... for $1500.
Seems like a pretty decent price if the work is good.
 
That’s the whole thing now isn’t. Anybody flow these heads yet?

Their website claims they flow 270.
Imo, if they flowed 250 on my bench.....provided the guide fit and VJ were decent...... I’d say $1500 was still a fair price.
 
If they flow 270 for $1500 a set they are just as good for the average build as the old New Zealand castings...

If I had an Eagle G3 engine hanging around, I wouldn’t be looking for R/T heads that’s for sure.

It’s a Saenz S-600 that I bought new in 2007.
It’s basically a copy of a Superflow SF-600.

It replaced my Superflow SF-110 that I had bought new in 1993.

Yes I got these heads flowed as I was skeptical on the lack of workmanship. Far from what he's advertising on his website for flow numbers. The exhaust ports are not even touched. Peaks at 150cfm at .400". Intake side peaks at 250cfm at .450" but then gets so turbulent the flow just takes a nose dive to 230cfm at .500".
I'll never deal with PIE again!
 
When ported properly they will flow the same. The difference was the smoothness of the actual casting and the better exhaust port alignment out of the box. Those items can be addressed with good porting.

NONE of this surprises me. The port is just too small and too fast for the shortside. Even getting a REAL EQ head to flow above .500" is a challenge--these Chinese castings are worse. The good news is 250 cfm @ .450" CAN make a lot of power--like 2.06 hp/cfm if you have a semi-serious shortblock under them. The Magnum head works-you will like. J.Rob

Hi JRob, I am considering these heads as well. Can you elaborate on what you mean by a "semi-serious shortblock"? Does this entail flattop hyper pistons at zero-deck? And when you say the "Magnum head works", do you mean specifically the PIE head or Magnums in general? Thanks - Joe
 
I've always wanted a set of new Zealand ones...looks like the Chinese version will do

for the price of the PIE heads, i would also be considering some SpeedMaster aluminum heads with a cleaned up valve job and maybe bowl blend.

no doubt, when IMM was doing the EQ/INDY X heads prepped for roughly $1500, that was a great head for the money.
 
The quickest way to tell them apart is the China brand has a Freeze plug in the end just like the factory.

True NZ EQ's do not!

EQ-CH318A is for the Magnum intakes and the EQ-CH318B is for the LA intake.

Guys the easy way to tell the difference is the NZ EQ's do not have a core plug in the end of the head but the chinese ones do.

You beat me to the punch. I actually went out to the shop to look at a NZ EQ to make certain before I posted as my mind aint what it used to be.
 
Anyone care to share what if anything other than a good valve job was being done on the NZ EQ's to get the 270 flow numbers advertised? Was it just the 2.02 valve and a 5 angle valve job or was there more to it than that?

most likely a quality valve job, bowl blend and slight short turn work..

Close! The 318A is Mag intake. 318B is the LA intake.
